REPORT: OHIO'S ECONOMIC FUTURE MAY DEPEND ON ENTREPRENEURS, SMALL BUSINESSES

Ohio's economy could get a much-needed jump-start if the state focused more on helping small businesses and self-employed workers succeed, according to a new Ohio State policy brief. But policymakers need to avoid methods that could limit economic gains, the authors say. The report, “Growth and Change: Does Enhancing Ohio's Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs Provide the Key to Growth?” was issued by Ohio State's Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy and the Exurban Change Project, both housed within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunchtime. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. TODAY: CENTRAL OHIO CARTOONIST FOCUS OF FREE TALK AT WEXNER

Lucy Shelton Caswell, curator of Ohio State’s Cartoon Research Library, will discuss the colorful life and career of Billy Ireland, one of the country’s most acclaimed and influential cartoonists in the early 20th century, at 4:30 p.m. today (1/24) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. Ireland was born in Chillicothe and hired by the Columbus Dispatch in 1898, where he worked as a cartoonist until his death in 1935. The talk is being held in conjunction with the publication of a new edition of Billy Ireland, Caswell’s beautifully illustrated book on the cartoonist. Read more >

SEMINAR SERIES: ROBERTS PRESENTS THE TRUTH ABOUT ETHANOL

The OSU Institute of Energy and Environment in collaboration with the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program and the five colleges (CoE, MAPS, SBS, CBS, and FAES) are presenting a weekly seminar series involving energy and environmental issues. Matt Roberts, associate professor of Agricultural, Environmental and Developmental Economics and associate professor at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, will deliver “The Truth About Ethanol” from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Friday (1/25) at the Ohio Super Computer Center, 1224 Kinnear Road. OSU OPERA PRESENTS MODERNIZED VERSION OF THE MAGIC FLUTE

Mozart’s classic coming-of-age fairytale The Magic Flute, first performed in 1791, gets a fresh focus when the OSU Opera program stages it Friday (1/25)-Sunday (1/27) in Thurber Theatre, Drake Performance Center. The updated version includes a cast of vocalists, an opera chorus and an orchestra, all from the School of Music. They will be joined by dancers from the Department of Dance and members of the Men’s Glee Club. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available from the Theatre box office (292-2295) and are $20 (reserved), $15 (faculty, staff and Alumni Association members), and $12 (seniors and students with ID). HONORS COLLEGIUM SEEKS NEW MEMBERS

“The Honors Collegium is looking for purposeful first- and second-year students who are driven to make a difference in the world and who have demonstrated academic excellence. ENGINEERS IN MOTION WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The College of Engineering and the Ohio State-Honda Partnership are hosting the Engineers in Motion Workshop for high-ability high school students from Sunday (6/15)-Friday (6/20) on the Columbus campus. The workshop is open to high school students who are currently in the ninth or 10th grade. Interested students should apply online by Friday (3/14). There is a $25 non-refundable application fee. Attendees will participate in hands-on demonstrations and experiments, and visit Honda of America in Marysville. Students will stay in campus dormitories, and housing and meals will be provided.
