Headline newsWIRED FOR SOUND: IMPLANT SENDS SIGNALS DIRECT TO BRAINA delicate surgery that involves placement of tiny electrodes onto the brainstem is helping some people avoid total hearing loss. The electrodes, connected to a device known as an auditory brain implant, are being placed in patients who require surgery to remove noncancerous tumors associated with a disorder called neurofibromastosis type II. The tumors are often entwined around the nerves that facilitate hearing. Over time the tumors - or the surgical intervention to remove them, can result in hearing loss. Bradley Welling, chair of otolaryngology at the OSU Medical Center, is one of the few surgeons in the U.S. trained to implant the devices. Read more >

SEMINAR SERIES: FIKSEL TO PRESENT RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTThe OSU Institute for Energy and the Environment, in collaboration with the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program, is presenting a weekly seminar series involving energy and environmental issues. Joseph Fiksel, executive director of the Center for Resilience, OSU College of Engineering, will discuss “Resilience and Sustainable Development” from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Friday (2/1) at the Ohio Super Computer Center, 1224 Kinnear Road. Contact: cas@osu.edu POPULAR NEW SOUSA BAND LED BY KEITH BRION TO PERFORM ON CAMPUSThe OSU School of Music is hosting a performance by Keith Brion and his New Sousa Band at 8 p.m. Wednesday (2/6) in Weigel Auditorium. The band commemorates the life and times of John Philip Sousa and is a fast-moving replica of Sousa concerts of the past. The concert will spotlight the 43 musicians in the band - including OSU School of Music faculty - as well as 75 members of the OSU Marching Band. Tickets are available by calling 292-2295, and are $15 (general), $10 (veterans), and $5 (seniors and students with ID). The concert is free for School of Music faculty, staff and students. Tickets also will be sold at the door unless the concert is sold out. Contact: 292-0789 OSU MARION KICKS OFF BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH GOSPELFEST 2008In recognition of Black History Month, Ohio State Marion is presenting Gospelfest 2008 at 5 p.m. Saturday (2/2) in Morrill Hall Auditorium. The special community concert welcomes performances by gospel singer Ursula Butts of Mansfield, the New Day Ministries Praise and Worship Team of Bucyrus, and a guest performance by the Marion Community Choir. Admission to the event is a suggested donation of one non-perishable food item, to benefit the Mayes Community Temple Food Pantry. Gospelfest is a collaborative effort by OSU Marion’s Office of Diversity and Office of Community Relations and Development. SUBMIT REPORTS OF BIAS INCIDENCES ONLINEReports of bias incidences may now be submitted online to the Bias Assessment and Response Team (BART). Reports may be submitted by both victims and witnesses of hate or bias-related incidents and all members of the university community are encouraged to utilize the online service. After submission, BART will address incidents and make support services available as necessary. Read more > OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP WITH IRB SUBMISSIONSThe Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. The sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies, and review procedures. HR OFFERS TAX TIPS WORKSHOP FEB. 5Human Resources will offer a brown bag workshop from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday (2/5) designed to cover simple tax planning techniques that will help you keep more of your money and lower your taxes. Learn how to set up dual-purpose accounts that give you tax-free money to pay for college or provide a cushion for retirement. The session will be held in the Office of Human Resources, 1590 N. Contact: 292-1050 SHORT FORM INFORMED CONSENT AVAILABLEA new resource is available to investigators performing human subjects research who unexpectedly encounter a non-English speaking subject potentially eligible for a study when translated materials are not available in the subject’s language. The Comprehensive Cancer Center, in conjunction with the Office of Responsible Research Practices, has provided an IRB-approved short form consent document translated into several languages. There are special requirements and restrictions for use of the short form consent.
