Our popular annual Cinema Latino series runs at the Wex this January with seven films from throughout Latin America. Coming soon, The Pope’s Toilet (Jan. 9) is a comic tale of villagers in Uruguay trying to make a buck off of Pope John Paul II’s 1988 visit. Silent Light (Jan. 15) is possibly the first film made in Plautdietsch, spoken by a Mennonite community living in Mexico, about a man in love with two women. Read more >

Study links molecule to muscle maturation, muscle cancer

Researchers at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered that a molecule implicated in leukemia and lung cancer is also important in muscle repair and in a muscle cancer, known as rhabdomyosarcoma, that strikes mainly children. The findings could lead to new treatments for this and other muscle diseases, says principal investigator Denis Guttridge, associate professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics. President Gee responds to state budget adjustments

In case you were away during the break, here is an item that ran recently in OSUToday:

Gov. Ted Strickland on Friday (12/19) ordered state spending slashed another $640 million to plug a growing shortfall in the two-year budget ending at the end of June. President E. Gordon Gee released a statement later that day regarding the state budget adjustments. Read the full statement

FCC chairman to visit WOSU@COSI as part of DTV outreach

FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin will visit cities in Ohio on Tuesday (1/6), including a public forum at 3:30 p.m. at WOSU@COSI, 333 W. Broad St. The visit is part of an extensive nationwide initiative the commission has launched to increase awareness about the upcoming DTV transition, set for Tuesday (2/17). Nominations sought for Multicultural Center 2009 Awards

The Multicultural Center seeks nominations from the university and the community for eight award categories of its annual awards that recognize the intercultural achievements of individuals and groups throughout OSU and the community. Submit your nomination by Friday (2/6) and save the date to celebrate at the ceremony on Monday (5/18). 2009 Doctoral Studies Research Training Awards

The Center for Health Outcomes, Policy and Evaluation Studies at the OSU College of Public Health is accepting applications for the 2009 Doctoral Studies Research Training Award, for study leading to the Ph.D. degree that will cover up to four years of full-time study. Candidates should have a strong academic record in a field related to health care policy and evaluation, high scores on the GRE, and be interested in pursuing research related to improving the health care system. All new Digital Storytelling Showcase Jan. 9

The Digital Storytelling Showcase is back, featuring an all new collection of multi-media projects by faculty and staff across campus. After immersion workshops in Photoshop, iMovie and Garage Band and a series of intensive story development roundtables, participants in this quarter’s program will present their work and answer questions about the production process. Responsible conduct of research workshop Jan. 14

A workshop on the Responsible Conduct of Research is scheduled from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday (1/14) in Longaberger Alumni House Grand Sanders Lounge. Free for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, the workshop provides training in the nine core areas of instruction as mandated by NIH guidelines for Responsible Conduct of Research. Keynote speaker is Annette Flanagin, managing deputy editor of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Co-sponsored by the Graduate School and the Office of Research. Register online. Weiss is DHLRI Discovery Series speaker Jan. 7

Robert Weiss, professor of medicine and radiology, Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine will deliver “Is the Failing Heart Energy Starved? Clinical and Basic Studies of the Role of Creatine Kinase in Heart Failure,” at noon Wednesday (1/7) in 170 Davis Heart Lung Research Institute. The DHLRI Discovery Series is designed to provide an opportunity for clinicians and other health practitioners to evaluate basic and clinical science research results presented by nationally recognized leaders. CCS offers free Qigong relaxation classes

Learn the art of relaxation through Qigong ("chee-gong"), a method of relaxation and stress management through gentle movement. Counseling and Consultation Services offers free sessions every Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Library/Media Resource Suite, Younkin Success Center, starting (1/7).
