Ohio State leaves its mark on Antarctica

As Kathy Welch was planning this, her 16th season of field study in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, she learned something that made her consider trying to add an extra side-trip to her four-month South Pole stay. Welch, a geochemist working with the United States Long-Term Ecological Research Network and research associate in the Environmental Geochemistry group at the Byrd Polar Research Center, joined a distinguished and ever-growing list of people from Ohio State to have geological features of the icy continent named for them. Free supervised exercise sessions four times per week, for 12 weeks!. Study participants complete four assessments of stress and fitness, and receive a small biopsy wound (1/4 inch in diameter) on the upper arm to evaluate the rate of wound healing. Join the Multicultural Center today (1/12) in paying tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. through an impromptu filming of faculty, staff and students reading and enacting his speech, "I've been to the Mountaintop." Bangladesh general to speak on security in South Asia

Lt. Gen. Mohd Aminul Karim, Commandant of National Defense College in Dhaka, Bangladesh, will speak on “Security in South Asia after the Mumbai Terror Attacks” at noon Friday (1/16) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Karim also served as the military secretary to the president of Bangladesh, Iazuddin Ahmed. AAAS Extension Center co-hosts Presidential Inauguration Luncheon

The CHANGE Agency in collaboration with OSU's Department of African & African American Studies Community Extension Center will host a Presidential Inauguration Luncheon from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday (1/20) at the AAAS Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. This is the culminating event of the larger project, A New Day Begun: Black History in the Making developed to focus on the historical importance of the 2008 Presidential Election. Advance tickets are $10 per person. Institute for Chinese Studies launches Future of the Past Film Series

The Institute for Chinese Studies is launching the Future of the Past Film Series at 7 p.m. Wednesday (1/14) in 040 Jennings Hall. The 2004 Hong Kong film (filmed in Shanghai), written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, is a visually seductive reverie of memory and regret refracted through a serial womanizer’s experiences with six women. Faculty in the Department of Consumer Sciences will help provide free financial advice for future retirees on Tuesday (1/13) and Friday (1/30). Online registration available for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

Online registration is now available for the OSU Women in Engineering Program’s 2009 Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day for female students in grades 3-6. Sponsored by the Ashland Corporation, IGED 2009 will take place from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday (2/28). The event will also include an optional program for parents/guardians. The American Language Program seeks conversation partners

The American Language Program (English as a Second Language) is recruiting conversation partners for international students. Conversation partners offer students studying English the chance to converse in a relaxed and non-academic atmosphere with a native English speaker. One hour per week commitment. Preparing Future Faculty information sessions

The Graduate School invites graduate students to attend an information session about the Preparing Future Faculty Program, which offers the opportunity to learn about careers at smaller colleges or universities through an arranged mentorship with a faculty member at one of Ohio’s leading liberal arts colleges. Designed for graduate students in the final stages of their Ph.D. or MFA degree programs.
