Ohio State researchers develop more accurate measure of cost of foodborne illness

Ohio State researchers have developed a method for more comprehensively measuring the social cost of foodborne illness that could become the standard model used nationwide. Using the new model, the best estimate of the annual cost of foodborne illness in Ohio is approximately $4.1 billion. Researchers said the methodology will help inform taxpayers about how much foodborne illnesses cost the state, and how much can be saved by supporting food safety education programs - both important issues today. Rob Portman’s talk “The Budget Challenges Facing the New Administration,” originally scheduled for 4 p.m. today (1/13), has been cancelled due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict. RESEARCH STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. Mershon Center seeks applications for grants

The Mershon Center for International Security Studies seeks applications from OSU faculty and students for grants to support projects related to the study of national security in a global context. Junior faculty and those who have not previously received Mershon grants are encouraged to apply by Friday (1/30). Proposed projects must relate broadly to one or more of three areas of focus: the use of force and diplomacy; the ideas, identities and decisional processes that affect security; and the institutions that manage violent conflict. Center for Latin American Studies launches film series

The Center for Latin American Studies kicks off its winter quarter film series with Un buda (A Buddha) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (1/14) in 180 Hagerty Hall. The film features an Argentinean youth who fights to postpone his private and profound spiritual urge to establish his identity. All films are free and have English subtitles. MCC StoryTelling Series features Eth-Noh-Tec Jan. 28, 29

The Multicultural Center StoryTelling Series and OSU StoryBox Project will feature Eth-Noh-Tec, the combined performance chemistry of Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang, later this month. Eth-Noh-Tec will conduct a Student Leadership Session at 7 p.m. Tuesday (1/27) in 300 Younkin Success Center, and a public performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday (1/28) in 150 Younkin Success Center. The David and Lucille Packard Foundation’s limited submission program, Fellowships for Science and Engineering, has been announced. The internal intent date is Friday (2/13). Candidates must be in the first three years of their faculty careers (initial faculty appointments began no earlier than 5/31/06 and no later than 5/31/09). Read more >

The Office of University Outreach and Engagement is offering a workshop from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday (1/15) in 400 Stillman Hall. Prepare to apply for outreach and engagement related grants with this workshop that will cover how to develop outcome statements/learning outcomes for projects and what to do with the results. Diversity Report invites submissions

The OSU Collaborative Diversity Initiative is accepting submissions for the 2009 edition of Facets of Diversity, Ohio State’s annual diversity report. The OSU Libraries ReadAloud program resumes its weekly sessions Thursday (1/15) at the Wexner Center Cafe from 3-4 p.m. Seymore Kleinman, emeritus faculty, College of Education and Human Ecology, will read from his work on the subject of “Somatic Literacy and the Body” and Nancy Courtney, Libraries coordinator for outreach, will read from Richard Armour’s Classics Reclassified.
