Kirwan report maps opportunity and race in Massachusetts

A report based on research conducted by the Kirwan Institute on behalf of the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute was presented to Massachusetts leaders and media at the Massachusetts State House on Monday (1/12). Speakers from the Kirwan Institute joined state government officials and others from Massachusetts legal aid programs, Harvard, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston to discuss how lawmakers, community advocates, and others can work together to enhance opportunities for all to succeed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. RESEARCH STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. Athletes not spared from health risks of metabolic syndrome

College-age football players who gain weight to add power to their blocks and tackles might also be setting themselves up for diabetes and heart disease later in life, a new study suggests. Standard health screening for certain risk factors might be a good idea for all collegiate football players, said Jackie Buell, director of sports nutrition at Ohio State and lead author of the study. Thompson, Mark to discuss Peruvian glaciers Jan. 21

Register by Jan. 18 for annual OSU-OSHA Safety Day

Ohio State and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will present the fourth annual OSU-OSHA Safety Day on Tuesday (1/27) at the Fawcett Center. A full day of educational programs will be taught by OSHA compliance officers, area building contractors and area safety vendors. On Research blog addresses weathercasters, global climate change

After a brief holiday respite, the blog "On Research" is back in business, this time questioning why television weathercasters often seem to be disbelievers when it comes to the question of global climate change and humans' influence on it. The blog, an effort by the staff of Research Communications in the Office of University Communications, provides new comment on science and society every week or so.
