Stuart L. Cooper, professor and chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering was recently elected to the Governing Board of the Council for Chemical Research, a national organization that recognizes and facilitates basic research in the chemical sciences and engineering. CCR’s purpose is to benefit society by advancing research in chemistry, chemical engineering and related disciplines through leadership collaboration across discipline, institution and sector boundaries. Support OSU research and meet Island Snake Lady Kristin Stanford from TV’s “Dirty Jobs” at Lake Erie Day at the Cleveland Boat & Waterfront Lifestyle Expo, on Monday (1/19) in the I-X Center. One dollar from every admission sale will benefit the research, education, and outreach efforts of OSU's Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory, the nation's oldest freshwater biological field station, located in Put-in-Bay on Gibraltar Island, Lake Erie. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, on Monday (1/19) the Multicultural Center will debut a recently produced film of OSU students and staff reading King's speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop." View online (click on the feature MLK Jr. Mountaintop Speech.) The full speech is covered in the film, merging the voices of 31 students and staff reading a few lines each of this historical speech. Closing remarks by special guest Javaune Adams-Gaston, the new vice president for Student Life at OSU.

The 2009 biometric screening calendar is wide open, with appointments available beginning Tuesday (1/20). Faculty and staff are encouraged to take advantage of this free benefit annually to track blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight and height. The data from the screening can be used to complete the Personal Health Assessment, which allows you to receive a $6.92 biweekly or $15 monthly discount off your medical premium and to participate in the 2009 Incentive Program and earn an additional reward up to $125. The Office of Workforce Development is offering a hands-on course, Developing and Delivering Effective Presentations from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday (2/5) at 1212 Kinnear Road. The staff of Counseling and Consultation Service, Student Life, is offering a workshop, “Coping with Distressed Students” for OSU faculty, staff and teaching assistants to learn about dealing with distressed or disruptive students. The workshop is offered twice in Younkin Success Center: from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday (1/21) or 4-5 p.m. Tuesday (1/27), both at 300 Younkin Success Center. The Student Life Diversity Council is seeking an OSU student to serve on the council, which is a group of Student Life staff dedicated to addressing issues of diversity across the Office of Student Life and the university. The student selected will be asked to attend the monthly meetings, held the first Thursday of each month from 9-11 a.m. The application deadline is Friday (1/30). Contact: Sharrell L. College of Dentistry students will offer free dental screening exams and free x-rays at their Board Screening Open House from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday (1/22) in the main reception area on the first floor of Postle Hall. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and in good health and will receive one free dental exam, two free x-rays, and an evaluation for additional free treatments. No appointment is necessary. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to apply for the Committee of 88, a student group comprised of one student from each of the 88 counties in Ohio to help celebrate our state's past, present and future by promoting the individual points of pride of each county.
