Brustein recommended for international post

 Provost Joseph Alutto has recommended William Brustein as the Vice Provost for Global Srategies and International Affairs at Ohio State. Subject to approval by the board of trustees, the appointment is effective Wednesday (7/1). Brustein, currently the associate provost for international affairs and director of international programs and studies, is also the Alumni Professor of International Studies and a professor of sociology, political science, and history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Web site provides one-stop shopping for university policies

The launch today (1/22) of the University Policies web site offers links to every policy governing Ohio State, and they are organized in user-friendly fashion, sortable by overarching content, alphabetically or by audience. Information on the site under the “About Policies” tab explains how the policy process works from start to finish, and tools under the site tab, such as templates to create a policy, make jumpstarting the task easier. RESEARCH STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. Today: Gregorich to speak on Antarctic Dry Valleys

Ed Gregorich, one of the world’s leading soil scientists, will speak at 3:30 p.m. today (1/22) in 103 Kottman Hall as part of the SENR Seminar Series. His presentation, Soils and Ecosystem Functioning in Antarctic Dry Valleys, will evaluate various possible sources of subsidies in dry valley soils, how the contributions from different sources vary with changing environmental conditions, and how these may ultimately affect ecosystem function in dry valleys. Dentistry students offer free exams and x-rays today

College of Dentistry students will offer free dental screening exams and free dental x-rays at their Board Screening Open House from 5-7:30 p.m. today (1/22) in the main reception area on the first floor of Postle Hall. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and in good health, and will receive one free dental exam, two free dental x-rays, and an evaluation for additional free treatments. The Best of iMix airs on the Big Ten Network

The Best of iMix will air on the Big Ten Network today (1/22) at 4 p.m.; Monday (1/26) at 4 a.m.; and Wednesday (1/28) at 10 a.m. Segments will feature OSU's Buckeye Bullet, OSU's Urban Arts Space in the historic Lazarus building in downtown Columbus, and OSU's Scarlet, Gray, and Green initiative. OSU Nursery Short Course Jan. 25-28

The 80th OSU Nursery Short Course is set for Sunday (1/25)-Wednesday (1/28) at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. A special free Sunday evening program will take place on Sunday featuring Great Britain's Hidcote Manor Gardens Head Gardener Glyn Jones at 6 and 8:15 p.m. A new track will cover the basics of plant growth and health including weed control, plant disease management, and understanding the life cycles of insects. Latino Ohio: Culture course in English for educators and other professionals

Meeting on six Saturdays this spring, Latino Ohio will offer a close-up look at Hispanic life in Ohio with attention to cultural, linguistic, and professional issues especially important to those working with Spanish-speaking populations. The 5-credit course is taught by Terrell Morgan, OSU associate professor of Hispanic linguistics, and is designed to introduce educators and other professionals to Ohio's Hispanic communities.
