Lt. governor to address Ohio State researchers Feb. 18

The Office of Research will host Ohio Lt. Governor Lee Fisher at its next Research Symposium from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (2/18) at the Longaberger Alumni House. Fisher will speak to Ohio State's research community regarding faculty as entrepreneurs and innovators. This is a unique opportunity to meet with Fisher, who is also the director of the Ohio Department of Development, and acquire information about development and other initiatives that exist to move Ohio’s economy forward. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Ohio State study shows link between bad air and diabetes

Approximately 24 million Americans suffer from diabetes. In addition to the consumption of diets high in fat and sugar, a new study suggests that the air you breathe may also be risky. Cardiovascular and lung researchers at the OSU Medical Center are the first to report a direct link between air pollution and diabetes. If the ongoing research continues to confirm this association, scientists fear human health in both industrialized and developing countries could be impacted. Read more >

CNN analyst Roland Martin to highlight Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

Ohio State will mark its Martin Luther King Jr. celebration with outspoken political analyst and award-winning journalist Roland S. Martin at 7 p.m. Tuesday (1/27) at the Holiday Inn on the Lane, 328 W. Lane Ave. The program is free and open to the public, however space is limited. The 36th annual celebration will feature the Ohio State African American Voices Gospel Choir and the 2008-09 King Memorial Scholars. Bartlett to discuss Cultural Politics of Literacy in Brazil

The Ohio State Lecture on Literacy Studies is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday (1/29) in the Knight House, 104 E 15th Ave. The featured lecturer is Lesley Bartlett of Columbia University, whose forthcoming book The Word and the World: The Cultural Politics of Literacy in Brazil examines how non-governmental organization educators translate Paolo Freire’s bold ideas about the purpose of education into classroom practice, and how the adult students’ perceptions of the meaning, purpose, and effect of literacy programs impact the learning process. Register for National Science Foundation overview

NSF will present a one-day workshop describing its proposal and merit review processes and its cross-disciplinary, special interest, and international programs on Tuesday (2/10), at the Kent State University campus. Faculty workshop addresses stress of pursuing tenure

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program will offer a workshop, “Stress and the Tenure Track” targeting the unique stress faced by academic professionals in pursuit of tenure, from noon-1 p.m. Thursday (2/5) in 115 Stillman Hall. EHS Chemical Redistribution Program

Environmental Health and Safety’s Chemical Redistribution Program provides usable chemicals to faculty and staff to be used on campus for university related purposes at no cost. Interested persons must register on the Environmental Affairs portion of the EHS web site to view the available chemicals. As requests are filled, they will be delivered within a week. University Outreach and Engagement is presenting Assessing Programs with the Logic Model, from noon-2 p.m. Friday (1/30) in 400 Stillman Hall.
