Ohio State bucks trend for student retention
While a new national survey shows fewer college freshmen returning to their colleges for their sophomore year, Ohio State is finding just the opposite among first year Buckeyes. An annual survey conducted by ACT, Inc., a non profit testing and research group, found that for the 2007-08 academic year, 66 percent of first-year college students returned to the same institution for their second year of college, the lowest percentage since 1989.
At Ohio State, a record 92.4 percent of first year students returned to campus for their sophomore year in 2007 and 92.8 percent returned last September (2008). Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Alumni Association accepting nominations for 2009 awards
The OSU Alumni Association is currently accepting nominations for its 2009 Alumni Awards. To nominate an alumnus for an award, visit the Association Web site (click on the 2009 Nomination Form link). Sands to present IMR Colloquia Series lecture Feb. 3
Timothy Sands will deliver "Metal/Semiconductor Superlattices as Thermoelectric Metamaterials for Solid-State Energy Conversion," a 2008-09 Institute for Materials Research Colloquia Series lecture, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday (2/3) in the Smith Seminar Room, Physics Research Building. Sands is Purdue University's Basil S. Turner Professor of Materials Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering and director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past” Film Series will continue at 7 p.m. Wednesday (1/28) in 040 Jennings Hall with 2046. The 2004 Hong Kong film (filmed in Shanghai) written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, is a visually seductive reverie of memory and regret refracted through a serial womanizer’s experiences with six women. Warhol cookbook satire discussed Jan. 28
Susan M. Rossi-Wilcox will discuss "Andy Warhol’s Wild Raspberries: Social Satire in the Guise of a Cookbook," about the making of a cookbook created by Andy Warhol and close friend Suzie Frankfurt in 1959 (a copy is on view behind glass in the exhibition Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms). The Multicultural Center StoryTelling Series and OSU StoryBox Project feature Eth-No-Tec, the combined performance chemistry of Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang, this month. Public Safety hosts blood drive Jan. 29
The Department of Public Safety is holding a blood drive from 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday (1/29) in 1019 Blankenship Hall. If you have donated on or before Thursday (12/4/08) you may be eligible to donate. Schedule an appointment online for this or other campus blood drives (sponsor code buckeyes.) Walk-ins are welcome. Donors may enter to win weekly and grand prize drawings.
