Statement from President Gee in support of the Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act

“As financial indicators continue to trend downward, the need for a targeted, multi-faceted economic-recovery effort has become critical. The federal economic stimulus bill now under consideration by Congress is one of many steps needed to remedy our country’s deteriorating fiscal circumstances. I applaud the inclusion of financial relief for states, investments in university research and infrastructure, and support for student financial aid, all of which will lead to both short- and long-term job creation across the state of Ohio.

Planet hunter nets prize for young astronomers

An early career of distinction, punctuated with the discovery of planets in other solar systems, has earned Ohio State researcher Scott Gaudi one of the highest honors given to young astronomers by the American Astronomical Society. Gaudi received the Helen B. Warner Prize for Astronomy for his “significant and broad theoretical contributions to the field of exoplanet research, particularly in the area of microlensing detection and characterization of planetary systems, as well as for planets detected via transit and traditional radial velocity techniques." IMR announces new facility grants awards

The Institute for Materials Research announces the winners of the most recent round of IMR Facility Grants, which make campus research facilities more accessible to materials-related researchers with the goal of strengthening near-term research proposals for external support. Ten new research projects, supporting 13 faculty researchers from seven departments within the College of Engineering and the College of Biological, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, were awarded grants for a total investment of $20,000. Temporary closure of Ninth Avenue Garage begins Jan. 30

The Ninth Avenue Garage will close at 6 p.m. Friday (1/30) and will remain closed through 5 a.m. Monday (2/2) due to a planned power outage. One exit gate on the north side will remain up so those parked in the garage after 6 p.m. Friday can still exit the facility. Please use the Safe Auto Hospitals Garage for alternate parking during this time. Read more >

ACCAD Technology Mentoring Program for Young Women applications available

Applications for the summer program Digital Animation: A Technology Mentoring Program for Young Women are now available online. Digital Animation is a free summer program for 8th and 9th graders in central Ohio with exhibited artistic potential to work with mentors from arts and technology fields at OSU from Monday (6/15)-Friday (6/26). Applications for TELR’s Distance and Open Education Innovation funding are due Friday (2/13). These grant/loan awards support development of new certificate and degree programs that enable "any place, any time" learning. Application details available online.

National K-6 Classroom Literacy Conference Feb 7-10

Faculty, staff, graduate students, and preservice teachers are invited to register for the 2009 National Reading Recovery & K–6 Classroom Literacy Conference, to be held Saturday (2/7)-Tuesday (2/10) at the Columbus Convention Center. More than 140 sessions will focus on all aspects of K-6 literacy. Register online. ReadAloud features OSU author

The OSU Libraries ReadAloud invites the community to its weekly program each Thursday from 3-4 p.m. at the Wexner Center Cafe. On Thursday (1/29) the program features author Jason Gray, University Press, who will share selections from his recent book, Photographing Eden. North Unitarian Universalist Congregation Parish Minister Susan Ritchie will share selections from her own writing.
