Headline newsINTERVENTION PROGRAM BOOSTS HEALTH, REDUCES SYMPTOMS IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTSPsychological interventions for cancer patients do more than just ease emotional distress - they directly improve health, new research suggests. A study of 227 breast cancer patients found that those who participated in a psychological intervention program were rated as having better health by a research nurse a full year after the program started. One particularly important result was that patients who exercised received a higher dose of their chemotherapy drug, possibly improving their overall treatment. Patients who participated in the program showed fewer and less severe symptoms, and functioned better than those who didn’t take part, said Barbara Andersen, co-author of the study and OSU professor of psychology. 2008 CAMPUS CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF TODAYThe 23rd Annual Campus Campaign - thought to be the largest and most successful faculty/staff giving program in the nation - kicks off today (2/1). The campaign runs through Wednesday (4/30). Since its inception in 1985, staff and faculty have given more than $118 million, supporting wide-ranging, diverse programs and initiatives that benefit the university, students and employees, and the community. A staggering array of nearly 9,000 funds reflects existing campus needs. WEB ACCESSIBILITY CENTER WINTER 2008 WORKSHOPSFive workshops with a focus on accessibility and usability, covering an array of Web media topics, are offered at no charge to OSU faculty, staff and students. All workshops are hands-on and last four hours. This quarter's series begins in late February and covers HTML and CSS design, PDF authoring, and accessibility testing. Register online OSU MANSFIELD HOSTS ANNUAL FAT TUESDAYThe OSU Mansfield/NCSC Arts and Lectures Committee and the Black History Month Committee are sponsoring the third Annual Fat Tuesday Celebration at 7 p.m. Tuesday (2/5) in the Eisenhower Student Union. LINGUISTICS HOSTS FIELDWORK WORKSHOPThe Department of Linguistics will present Into the Field: A Workshop on Methods and Rewards in Fieldwork from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday (2/9) at the Mershon Center. The workshop is intended to initiate conversations with other programs about fieldwork across disciplines on the OSU campus. The program includes sessions on exploring language in the field, ethical practices and responsibilities in the field, fieldwork and state politics, and university-community relations. OSU MARION SCIENCE CAFÉ TACKLES CROSSROADS OF SCIENCE & RELIGIONRobert Klips, Ohio State evolution, ecology, and organismal biology professor and John Holliger, Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Marion, will share expert opinions and research from their varied fields at the next Science Café, hosted by OSU Marion from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday (2/5). The public is invited to Rise and Dine Restaurant, Legacy Crossing, 142 McMahan Blvd., for the free monthly community dialogue on science. Klips and Holliger will summarize the views of several prominent scientists and theologians and add their own to the mix. The evening will also include an audiovisual media presentation created by Holliger using images from the Hubbell telescope and his own photography. The book features a 300-work cross-section of the more than 6,000 works in the collection. Lewis, a long-time champion of artist Kerry James Marshall, selected his work for that collection. Lewis’ visit coincides with his Every Beat of My Heart exhibition and performances in the Wexner galleries. In addition to Marshall, artists represented in the book include Vito Acconci, Tina Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Richard Tuttle, and Andy Warhol, among others.
