Headline newsABERCROMBIE & FITCH GIVES $10 MILLION TO OSU MEDICAL PROGRAMSPresident E. Gordon Gee announced Friday (2/1) a $10 million gift from central Ohio-based retailer Abercrombie & Fitch to Ohio State. The gift will support research and patient care initiatives in inflammatory bowel/digestive diseases at the OSU Medical Center and in women’s oncology at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. With the receipt of the initial funds from the gift, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of two endowed funds, the Abercrombie & Fitch Women’s Oncology Center Endowment Fund and the Abercrombie & Fitch Fund in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. POWELL IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR UNITED BLACK WORLD MONTH CELEBRATIONKevin Powell, author, hip hop historian and community activist, will deliver the keynote address for United Black World Month at Ohio State at 7 p.m. today (2/4) in Hitchcock Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public but seating is limited. The 38th anniversary celebration will feature programs throughout the month that highlight the accomplishments of African Americans in art, music, history and education. FORMER JUDGE ADVOCATE IN IRAQ TO DISCUSS EXPERIENCESMarc Warren, former Staff Judge Advocate for Multi-National Forces in Iraq, will speak on “Legal Support in Wartime: Reflections of a Judge Advocate” at noon Monday (2/11) in the Moritz College of Law’s Saxbe Auditorium. Warren served as the top legal advisor for Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of coalition forces in Iraq in 2003-04. This was the first full year of the Iraq War, when American forces set up the Iraqi constitution and captured Saddam Hussein, and when the counterinsurgency took root and the Abu Ghraib scandal became public. In his talk, Warren will reflect on the wide range of legal issues and problems he faced during this critical period. Read more > EVOLUTIONARY INFLUENCES OF MALE GENITAL MORPHOLOGY FEB. 8The Departments of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, Veterinary Biosciences, and Veterinary Clinical Sciences invite the OSU community to a presentation by Mathew Simmons, urologist at the Cleveland Clinic, from 4-5 p.m. Friday (2/8) in the Wexner Lecture Hall, Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. Simmons will deliver “Male Genital Morphology and Function: An Evolutionary Perspective.” His works have been published in prominent Urology journals and he holds a patent for a hydraulic penile prosthesis. PUBLIC TICKETS ON SALE TODAY FOR SPIKE LEE CONVERSATIONPublic tickets go on sale today (2/4) for A Conversation with Spike Lee, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday (2/12) in Mershon Auditorium. Lee, who will be in town to receive the $50,000 Wexner Prize and to participate in a variety of events for students and the public, will discuss his work and ideas with author James McBride, whose acclaimed novel Miracle at St. Anna, about African American soldiers in Italy during World War II, is the basis of Lee's next film. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $6 for members. Submissions should seek to educate people about any aspect of global health including health care for underserved populations within and outside of the United States, physical health care structures, administration of health care, preventative measures, and indigenous medicine.
