ALUTTO TO DELIVER STATE OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ADDRESS FEB. 7

Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Alutto will highlight five of the year’s academic priorities in his State of Academic Affairs address to the University Senate, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (2/7) in 130 Drinko Hall. The address, “Planning for Change,” will feature information and updates on strategic planning, doctoral program reviews, the arts and sciences federation, the Academic Core North and the University System of Ohio. CREATING ONLINE VENUES FOR STUDENT WORK FEB. 6

A roundtable discussion, “Motivating Students to Write: Creating Online Venues for Student Work” will take place from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday (2/6) in 150 Younkin Success Center. Hear from teachers who have tailored online venues for their classes and discuss how to prepare students to write for such venues. Register online

DISABILITY IN KENYA: A COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVE

A roundtable discussion on disability rights and policies in Kenya, with professors Philip Armstrong and Nina Berman (Comparative Studies), Brenda Brueggemann (English), R. Brian Stone (Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design), and independent scholar Marian Lupo will take place from 12:30-2 p.m. Friday (2/8) at the George Wells Knight House Humanities Institute, 104 E. 15th Ave. The panel will reflect on a 2007 trip to Kenya, launching a long-term project collaborating with Kenyan researchers to study the comparative culture politics of disability. The OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series is presenting author Tom Perrotta for a free public reading and book signing at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (2/7) in the Wexner Film/Video Theatre. A question and answer forum will precede the reading at 3 p.m. in the Denney Hall Commons Room. Perrotta’s works include Little Children and Election, both of which were adapted into critically acclaimed films. The reading is free and open to the public. Contact: 292-2242

The weekly University Libraries ReadAloud program features faculty, staff, students and community members reading from their favorite works. WELDING ENGINEERING HOSTS OPEN HOUSE FEB. 8

Ohio State’s Welding Engineering Program is hosting its annual Welding Engineering Open House from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday (2/8) at the Edison Joining Technology Center, 1248 Arthur E. Adams Dr. The event provides an opportunity for undecided engineering students on the Ohio State campus, as well as community college and high school students, to learn more about this unique program. NEW SOUSA BAND LED BY KEITH BRION TO PERFORM ON CAMPUS

The OSU School of Music is hosting a performance by Keith Brion and his New Sousa Band at 8 p.m. Wednesday (2/6) in Weigel Auditorium. The band commemorates the life and times of John Philip Sousa and is a fast-moving replica of Sousa concerts of the past. The concert will spotlight the 43 musicians in the band - including OSU School of Music faculty - as well as 75 members of the OSU Marching Band. Tickets are available by calling 292-2295, and are $15 (general), $10 (veterans), and $5 (seniors and students with ID). The concert is free for School of Music faculty, staff and students. LINGUISTICS HOSTS FIELDWORK WORKSHOP

The Department of Linguistics will present Into the Field: A workshop on methods and rewards in fieldwork from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday (2/9) at the Mershon Center. The workshop is intended to initiate conversations with other programs about fieldwork across disciplines on the OSU campus. The program includes sessions on exploring language in the field, ethical practices and responsibilities in the field, fieldwork and state politics, and university - community relations. Read more >

SUBMIT REPORTS OF BIAS INCIDENTS ONLINE

Reports of bias incidences may now be submitted online to the Bias Assessment and Response Team (BART). Reports may be submitted by both victims and witnesses of hate or bias-related incidents and all members of the university community are encouraged to utilize the online service. After submission, BART will address incidents and make support services available as necessary. Read more >
