NEW DEVICE MAY REPLACE BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION

Physicians at the OSU Medical Center are leading a new clinical trial to treat hypertension by implanting a medical device that stimulates the body’s own natural system to lower blood pressure. The trial will test a new treatment for patients who can no longer control their high blood pressure with medications and lifestyle modifications. The device is slightly larger than a deck of cards and is surgically implanted under the skin near the collarbone. Randy Wexler, a family medicine physician at OSU Medical Center and Jean Starr, director of endovascular services at OSU Medical Center, are co-investigators of the study. Read more >

FORMER COMMANDER OF CENTCOM TO VISIT CAMPUS

Gen. John P. Abizaid, former Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), will deliver “Strategic Challenges in the Middle East” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (2/20) at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. Abizaid, who led CENTCOM from 2003-07, will discuss strategic challenges in the Middle East, including the rise of Islamic extremism, Iran’s development of nuclear power, the corrosive effects of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the global reliance on oil. GATEWAY TO HOST ARNOLD SPORTS FESTIVAL INFO SESSION

South Campus Gateway is hosting a special informational presentation from 6-7 p.m. Thursday (2/7) at the Drexel Gateway Theater, showcasing the upcoming Arnold Sports Festival to be held in Columbus Friday (2/29)-Sunday (3/2). The public is invited to attend the session, which also will include a visit from Phil Pfister, the World’s Strongest Man. ENTRIES SOUGHT FOR OHIO SHORT FILM AND VIDEO SHOWCASE

The Wexner Center is currently accepting entries for the 13th annual Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, set for 7 p.m. Saturday (5/10) at the Wexner Center. The showcase provides Ohio’s independent media artists a chance to show their work in a theatrical setting before an audience. The deadline for entries is Friday (3/28).
