Headline newsINSOMNIA PATIENTS OFTEN DENIED SLEEP TREATMENT WHEN THEY HAVE MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONSPatients with insomnia who are diagnosed with accompanying mental health ailments often are not prescribed medication that will help them sleep - which could then make related anxiety or depression worse, new research suggests. Scientists examining treatment patterns for insomniacs say that their findings suggest that many doctors appear to be reluctant to prescribe sleep aids, even those that pose no risk of dependence, if patients also have depression, anxiety or mood disorders. Rajesh Balkrishnan, the Merrell Dow professor of pharmacy at Ohio State, is the senior study author. Read more >
SYMPOSIUM ON IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN SET FOR FEB. 13The Mershon Center for International Security Studies and the Middle East Studies Center will host a symposium at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday (2/13) that explores military occupation, internal dynamics, and the view of ordinary people on current events in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Expert panelists Taher al-Bakaa, Alam Payind and Richard Herrmann will address Iraqi internal social dynamics, with an emphasis on Sunni-Shi'i relations, as well as problems relating to the occupation and solutions for the future. The panel will also present an analysis of Afghanistan's domestic and international challenges, including the Taliban's struggle to regain power.
