FORMER COMMANDER OF CENTCOM TO VISIT CAMPUS

Gen. John P. Abizaid, former Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), will discuss “Strategic Challenges in the Middle East” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (2/20) at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. CENTCOM directs the operations of 250,000 American troops in a 27-country region that includes the Middle East. Abizaid, who led CENTCOM from 2003-07, will discuss challenges in the Middle East, including the rise of Islamic extremism, Iran’s development of nuclear power, the corrosive effects of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the global reliance on oil. In honor of Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month, the Young Adult Transition Corps at the Nisonger Center is hosting a workshop, “Inspiring Equality: A Disability and Cultural Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Friday (2/22) in 131 Hitchcock Hall. LIBRARIES READALOUD HAS VALENTINE’S DAY THEME

The program features nationally recognized Central Ohio Romance Writers Rosemary Laurey, Donna MacMeans and Janet Lynnford reading from their recent works of fiction. JOHN O'GRADY TO SPEAK AT KNOWLTON FRIDAY

John O'Grady, candidate for Franklin County Commissioner in the March 4 Democratic primary, will discuss issues facing the county, at 11:30 a.m. Friday (2/15) at the Knowlton School of Architecture, Room 190. O'Grady is currently Franklin County Clerk of Courts and has been endorsed by the Franklin County Democratic party. PUBLIC HEALTH DEAN TO PRESENT RESEARCH ON ELDERLY AND COGNITIVE DISORDERS

Stanley Lemeshow, dean of the College of Public Health will present details on his research as part of the college’s Public Health Seminar Series from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday (2/18) in M-008 Starling-Loving Hall. During spring quarter 2007, Lemeshow collaborated with top French neuroepidemiologists in Paris on a population-based study of the elderly at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM). His research focused on analyzing the vascular risk factors for vascular and cognitive disorders in a study of more than 9,000 elderly people. He also researched possible correlations between Alzheimer’s and height, income and educational achievement. No RSVPs necessary. Contact: krenick@cph.osu.edu

CAS LECTURE SERIES: ART EDUCATION TO ADDRESS SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Center for African Studies lecture series continues this week with "Using Community-Based Art Education to Address Social Justice: an Evolving Project in Tshwane, South Africa" from noon-1 p.m. Friday (2/15) in 122 Oxley Hall. The discussion will be presented by Vesta Daniel, OSU professor in the Department of Art Education. In South Africa higher education is responding to the need to restructure in order to meet social, cultural and economic development imperatives of the new social order, and to establish a single coordinated national higher education system. ANNUAL WINTER PROGRAM, SILENT AUCTION FOR STONE LAB, OHIO SEA GRANT COLLEGE PROGRAM

The annual winter program and silent auction for Stone Laboratory and the Ohio Sea Grant College Program will take place from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday (2/20) at the Fawcett Center. Chris Korleski, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, will present “Why Our Collective Work is So Important.” A silent auction will be held at 7 p.m. to benefit Stone Lab programs and scholarships. Auction items include tickets to various cultural activities, travel opportunities, signed limited edition prints, items for the home and office, meals at local restaurants and items for OSU fans. NEW SURPLUS PROPERTY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ANNOUNCED

The Office of the Controller is implementing a new Surplus Property Management System that will replace the Treasure or Trash system. The system will provide electronic submittal of surplus forms, online notification to the Asset Management department and OSURF regarding asset retirements and real time inventory of items in the surplus warehouse. Upon implementation, all submissions of surplus material must be initiated by completing an electronic disposal request from the new online system. Information on how to get department and security access has been communicated to all senior fiscal officers. System user training sessions will be provided from March-April. IRB APPLICATION HELP SESSION FEB. 20

Investigators, graduate students and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications (e.g., initial review, continuing review, amendment, event reporting), from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (2/20) in 117 Research Foundation, 1960 Kenny Road. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will be on hand to answer questions.
