Headline newsOSU COLLABORATIONS AWARDED STEM AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACADEMIESTwo OSU partnerships are among eight programs statewide awarded Ohio Board of Regents STEM and Foreign Language Academies for FY 2008 announced Tuesday (2/19). The academies provide opportunities for 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in public or chartered nonpublic schools, particularly those who currently may not aspire to attend college or to study careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields, to pursue college-level credit at no cost to the student. SUMMER ACADEMY TO TEACH MODELING, SIMULATION SKILLS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, TEACHERSA Summer Academy in Computational Science and Engineering will teach sophisticated computer modeling and simulation skills to Ohio high school students and teachers, thanks to the Ohio Board of Regents STEM and Foreign Language Academies grant program. Staff of the Ralph Regula School of Computational Science at the Ohio Supercomputer Center will lead the program. OSU engineering professors John Demel and Michael Parke will oversee program preparation and instruction for students and teachers at the OSU site, while a pair of Akron University engineering professors will oversee participants at the Akron site. The two-week summer program beginning Monday (6/16) will include short lectures, individual project assignments, physical experiments and data gathering, and a group project. OSU LECTURE ON LITERACY STUDIES: THE RHETORICS OF LITERACYThe Ohio State Lecture on Literacy Studies is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday (3/6) in the Knight House at 104 E 15th Ave. The featured lecturer is John Duffy of Notre Dame, whose newly published study of Hmong-Americans looks at the disparate political and institutional forces that influence the development of reading and writing abilities within cultural communities where writing is not widespread. Duffy’s lecture will look at the ways the Hmong - whose language had no widely accepted written form until the late 20th century - and other refugees and immigrants to the U.S. claim the possibilities of literacy for themselves. OSU MANSFIELD BLACK HISTORY LECTURE SERIES CONTINUES FEB. 28Rebecca Wanzo, OSU assistant professor of African-American and African Studies and Women's Studies will deliver “In the Shadows of Anarcha: African-American Women, Pain, and Medical Research” at noon Thursday (2/28) in the Eisenhower Student Union on the Mansfield campus. The event is sponsored by the OSU Mansfield Black History Month Committee. Contact: smith.61@osu.edu or (419) 755-4215 OSU EXTENSION TO HELP KICK OFF OHIO SAVES WEEK FEB. 24OSU Extension is helping to coordinate activities throughout the state beginning Sunday (2/24) for Ohio Saves Week, part of America Saves Week, an effort to increase awareness that people need to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. Several county extension offices are taking part in Ohio Saves Week activities. Activities in Franklin County include: "Grow the Money You Have," 7 p.m. Tuesday (2/26) at the Grandview Heights Public Library, 1685 W. First Ave., and "From Debt to Wealth, or How to Save $1 Million: The Basics of Becoming an American Saver," 6-8 p.m. Thursday (2/28) at the Linden Library, 2223 Cleveland Ave. Read more > PANEL DISCUSSION: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A REFUGEEThe University Libraries Diversity Committee, International Affairs, the College of Social Work and Students for Community Cultural Awareness are co-sponsoring a panel discussion, “What it Means to be a Refugee" at 7 p.m. Monday (2/25) in 200 Campbell Hall. The panel will consist of four students who are refugees from Somalia, Sierra Leone and Palestine. The event will be emceed by Inna Simakovsky, president and founder of the Economic Community Development Institute and a refugee from the former Soviet Union. Light refreshments will be served. Read more > BILL HOSKET TO ADDRESS SBS ALUMNI SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETINGSBS College graduates are invited to attend the SBS Alumni Society’s annual meeting on Sunday (3/9) at Longaberger Alumni House - two hours before the OSU vs. Michigan State basketball game. Keynote speaker will be former OSU basketball star Bill Hosket, former All American and Academic All American and current analyst for ESPN Regional Television Big Ten. Autographed basketballs and other items will be auctioned for the student scholarship fund. Admission is $20 with all proceeds going to the SBS Alumni Society Student Scholarship Fund (free for students enrolled in the college of SBS). RSVP by Monday (3/3).
