Ohio State recognized for community engagement by Carnegie Foundation
Ohio State has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for both community outreach efforts and for community-engaged curriculum. The university is one of 68 public and 51 private institutions selected for the Carnegie Foundation’s 2008 “Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships” classification. The 15 Ohio State outreach initiatives in the foundation's recognition include collaborations with community partners, businesses, other universities, and other nations. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Smith to oversee revenue centers formerly part of Student Life
Gene Smith, assistant vice president and athletics director, has been promoted to associate vice president by Jeff Kaplan, senior vice president and special assistant to the president. In this enhanced role, Smith will assume additional oversight responsibilities for several revenue-generating areas formerly within the Office of Student Life, including the Schottenstein Center, the Blackwell Inn, Fawcett Center and the Drake Center. This role in the senior vice president’s office is separate from, and in addition to, Smith’s responsibilities as Athletics Director, for which he still reports to the president. The additional business units he is overseeing will not become part of the Department of Athletics; however the new alignment will strengthen the One University approach. Xenn Riggs will continue the day-to-day management of these units.
OSU in the running for several TechColumbus Innovation Awards
Ohio State will be well represented at the annual TechColumbus Innovation Awards (formerly known as TopCat) starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (2/5) in the Greater Columbus Convention Center - Grand Ballrooms, 400 N. High St. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in technology leadership and innovation; 13 leaders and teams who exemplify the best in technology leadership and innovation in 2008 will be honored. Ohio State is nominated in the following categories: Outstanding Technology Team, Green Innovation, Outstanding Woman in Technology and Inventor of the Year. Read more >
Instructional Space Study to impact classrooms of the future
While a final report with long-term recommendations is expected this spring, a number of suggestions emerged from feedback that has allowed the Registrar’s Office and the Classroom Readiness Committee to begin responding to requests from the campus community. Classroom Technology: The ongoing goal of providing installed technology in all classroom pool rooms was strongly affirmed by all groups. During this academic year, the Classroom Readiness Committee is adding technology to nearly 50 additional rooms. The goal is 100 percent technology access in campus classrooms by 2011. Read more >

The OSU Burn Consortium will observe National Burn Prevention Week by hosting an event from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today (2/4) at the MarketPlace at Neil (conference room). Voyages of Discovery: Museum of Biological Diversity Open House
The Museum of Biological Diversity, 1315 Kinnear Road, will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (2/7). This event is always a hit for children of all ages and a unique chance to see inside a working museum normally closed to the public. Student Wellness Center winter workshops continue
The Student Wellness Center is hosting two events: Double Dare at 6:30 p.m. Monday (2/16) in EA 170; and Generation RX at 7 p.m. Tuesday (2/17) in MP 1015. Greek Life, University Housing, student organizations, other groups and individual students are invited to attend these free, one-hour workshops.
