Lowrie family donates $17 million to Ohio State Engineering
Ohio State today (2/6) announced a commitment of $17 million from Ernestine and William G. Lowrie in support of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State. The commitment is the largest made by an individual donor to engineering at the university. The gift will endow construction and support of a new laboratory facility, create the H.C. “Slip” Slider Professorship for an untenured faculty member in chemical and biomolecular engineering, establish a new endowed chair, and provide an endowment to support initiatives in education and research.
Their gift will be recognized with the naming of the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to be housed in the new Koffolt Laboratories building, scheduled for completion in 2014.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. HR/SIS System will be unavailable Feb. 8
The Human Resources and Student Information System, including the Admissions Applicant Status Page, will be unavailable on Sunday (2/8) from 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. due to scheduled maintenance. System availability is expected to resume after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. User groups including: HR, eRecruit, eProfile and Student Applicants will be unable to access the HR-SIS during this maintenance period. Additionally, parties who access the Human Resources reporting database will have limited access to HCRPT on Sunday. HCRPT will be unavailable from noon-4:30 p.m. on Sunday (2/8). Read more >
Life Sciences Task Force open forums
Faculty, researchers and graduate students are invited to attend one of three open forums to help define future directions for the life sciences at Ohio State. The forums are sponsored by the Task Force on Life Sciences, an initiative from the doctoral review assessment process. A summary of the task force’s efforts to date will be available before the forums, set for: Tuesday (2/10), 1:30-2:30 p.m., 1080 Smith Lecture Room, Physics Research Bldg; Thursday (2/12), 10:30-11:30 a.m. 104 Aronoff Lab; and Wednesday (2/18), noon-1 p.m. 333 Kottman Hall. Ackerman Library closed Feb. 7

OSC Customize Your Own software workshop Feb. 16-20
The Ohio Supercomputer Center will host academic and industry researchers for a week of customized high performance software presentation and consultation, from noon-5 p.m. Monday (2/16)-Friday (2/20) in the OSC BALE Theatre. Attend any or all informal sessions offered during the week. Each day will start with a software discussion topic, followed by one-on-one consultation. Register online >

The University Staff Advisory Committee is currently accepting applications for the 2009-2012 term. USAC is an advisory committee to the president made up of 30 staff members. OSU School of Music presents Drums Downtown VI
The OSU School of Music's Percussion Ensemble joins forces with OSUDance and students from the Department of Art and ACCAD to present Drums Downtown VI, at 8 p.m. Friday (2/27) and Saturday (2/27) at the Riffe Center's Capitol Theater, 77 S. High St. Drums Downtown will also feature "Come early, Stay late!" with a pre-concert discussion offered each night at 7 p.m. and a post-concert discussion, taking place after the Friday performance. OSU Mansfield presents Healing from Hate: A Journey to Understanding
Ohio State Mansfield will present “Healing from Hate: A Journey to Understanding,” by Father Foshage, a Roman Catholic priest, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (2/10) in Founders Auditorium. Foshage helped organize community events in southeast Texas following the tragic death of James Byrd, Jr. in June 1998. Classical guitar concert at Ohio State Newark Feb. 7
Classical guitarist Brian Percoco will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday (2/7) in the Alford Performing Arts Hall at the Reese Center.
