Gee endorses new sustainable energy proposal

On Monday (2/9), OSU President E. Gordon Gee participated in an announcement in Washington, D.C. of a major proposal aimed at transforming the nation's energy policy. Sponsored by the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program, the event introduced a new Blueprint for American Prosperity report, "Energy Discovery-Innovation Institutes: A Step toward Energy Sustainability." The report calls for increased federal funding of up to $6 billion for sustainable energy programs and the creation of a national network of regional energy-oriented research centers largely based at universities in partnership with laboratories. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Partnership will open access to medical college for community college students

Ohio State, in partnership with Columbus State Community College, is leading a national pilot to guide more community college students to medical school and other health care professions. The Pipeline to Medical Colleges Initiative is the first step in a new national partnership between community colleges and four-year colleges and universities that expands access to the baccalaureate degree as well as to graduate and professional degrees. Centers for Innovation information repository now available

Ohio State’s new program, Centers for Innovation and Innovation Groups, fosters broad multidisciplinary approaches to some of society’s most pressing problems. A new web site will help faculty share information about ideas for centers and groups currently being developed across campus to build interdisciplinary collaborations. Faculty organizing projects are invited to submit the working title of their project, a brief description/focus of the project, a list of collaborators and college affiliations, contact information, and type of proposal to research@osu.edu for posting on the web site. Help WOSU Public Media answer the call

WOSU Public Media is looking for volunteers to assist in a phone bank that will receive calls from the community regarding the upcoming digital television transition. There is no technical knowledge or experience necessary to field caller questions, with all of the materials and operator support being provided by knowledgeable WOSU staff members. The WOSU DTV Call Center, located in the Fawcett Center, will be open daily through Wednesday (3/4). Volunteers especially needed on Tuesday (2/17)-Thursday (2/19). Daily shifts times: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-5 p.m., or 5-9 p.m. Contact: higginbotham@wosu.org

StoryTelling Series, StoryBox Project features Onawumi Jean Moss

The Multicultural Center invites you to share your story as a part of the OSU StoryBox project with Onawumi Jean Moss, a storyteller, narrator, keynote speaker and author whose dramatic expression, inspirational a cappella music, soulful rhythms and improvisation are sure to encourage pride of heritage, kinship and appreciation of cultural differences. The Center for Folklore Studies is presenting “Mirrors and Compasses: An 85th Birthday Symposium for Erika Bourguignon” from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday (2/20) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. In her 40 years at OSU, she chaired the Department of Anthropology, co-created a weekly radio program on world music, helped create the Women in Development seminar, and chaired the Council on Academic Excellence for Women.
