Fisher College to host poverty summit
Ohio Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher and the ambassador of Bangladesh, along with international business executives, students, scholars and poverty practitioners, will gather Friday (2/20) at the Fisher College of Business for the Alleviating Poverty Through Entrepreneurship Summit. The daylong event, inspired and organized by Fisher students, will bring together poverty experts and individuals interested in the topic. Lt. Gov. Fisher, who is leading the state's efforts to retain, attract, and create jobs and grow Ohio's economy through his position as director of the Ohio Department of Development, will deliver the keynote address. The Ambassador of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, M. Humayun Kabir, also will give a keynote presentation. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Academic Affairs restructures positions to respond to institutional priorities
The Office of Academic Affairs is recasting the responsibilities of two vice provosts in order to further strengthen undergraduate education and provide department chairs with new opportunities for honing their administrative skills. The considerable responsibilities of Martha Garland, presently vice provost for enrollment services and dean of undergraduate education, will be divided between two positions upon Dr. Garland's retirement later this year. The responsibilities of the vice provost for academic policy and faculty resources, presently held by Dr. Carole Anderson, will expand to include greater oversight of leadership preparation and training for department and academic program heads. Emergency management web site offers tips and resources
Faculty and staff affected by Wednesday's high winds are encouraged to view the Emergency Management web site that includes a number of links to useful resources. Included on the site is information on how to recover from severe weather to building a disaster kit for general preparedness.
Environmental Sciences task force open forums
Faculty, researchers and graduate students are invited to attend one of two open forums to help define future directions for the environmental sciences at Ohio State. The forums are sponsored by the Task Force on the Environmental Sciences, an initiative that came out of the doctoral review assessment process. A summary of its efforts to date will be available before the forums, to be held: Monday (2/16) from 3-4 p.m. in 1080 Smith Lecture Room, Physics Research Bldg; and Thursday (2/19) from 8-9 a.m. in 104 Aronoff Lab. Duke scientist to deliver annual Biodiversity Lecture
Duke University marine biologist and deep sea explorer Cindy Lee Van Dover will present the annual Museum of Biological Diversity Lecture, "The Octopus's Garden: Tales of Discovery at Deep-Sea Hot Springs," on Tuesday (2/17) at 7 p.m. in Jennings Hall Auditorium. Van Dover is the only woman in the country licensed to pilot the Alvin Diver for deep-sea exploration. The lecture is free and everyone is invited to attend. Contact: John Wenzel at 292-7773.
WOSU-TV will make DTV transition on June 12
WOSU Public Media will keep its analog channel on-air until June 12. More than 30,000 households in the community — many of them belonging to the elderly — are not ready for the conversion. Station management asks those more savvy with technology to take a moment to help their elderly friends — ask them if they are ready for the conversion, and if they need any help securing or installing a converter box. 'The Laramie Project' on stage in Lima
The Ohio State University at Lima Department of Theatre will present "The Laramie Project" at 8 p.m. Feb. 26-28, and at 2 p.m. March 1 in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts. The play is based on interviews from people connected to the 1998 murder of Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard. Director and Ohio State alum Kim Barrett will talk about "The Laramie Project" at a Performing Arts and Lecture Series event at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in 160 Reed Hall. 2009-10 Freshman Seminars call for proposals
The Freshman Seminars program has instituted a new rolling deadline for Freshman Seminar proposals. Proposals will be due one year before the seminar will be taught. Tenure-track faculty are invited to propose a one- or two-credit Freshman Seminar for the upcoming academic year (2009-10). Seminars to be taught winter quarter 2010 are due March 1, 2009.
