Dr. Gee goes to Washington

Ohio State President Gordon Gee has spent a decent chunk of his first 16 months back on the job explaining to the local crowd the benefits -- actually the necessity -- of higher education leading the way out of economic turmoil. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Must have access to internet. A volunteer fee will be paid. If you are interested, please e-mail gcrc.research@osumc.edu.

Ohio State cosponsors Megaconference Jr. event today

Today (2/19), students and educators will participate in the sixth annual Megaconference Jr. global event, cosponsored by Ohio State's Emerging Technologies unit. The event involves students in elementary/primary and secondary schools around the world. Using multipoint videoconferencing equipment and Internet2 technology, more than 150 schools will teach and learn in real-time from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. EST. Today: Pecha Kucha Night at Landmark’s Gateway Theater

Columbus’ next Pecha Kucha Night will take place at 7 p.m. today (2/19) at Landmark’s Gateway Theater, 1550 N. High St. in South Campus Gateway. The event is a unique forum for young designers to meet, network and show their work to the public in a uniform format. Each artist is allowed 20 images and 20 seconds per image or six minutes and 40 seconds to present and discuss their artwork before a live audience. Feb. 20: Chauncey Leake Award for Excellence in Pharmacology

The Chauncey D. Leake Seminar and Award for Excellence in Pharmacology will be presented at 12:30 p.m. Friday (2/20) in 250 Parks Hall. Arnold Schwartz, Distinguished University Professor and director of the Institute of Molecular Pharmacology & Biophysics, CVRC, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, will discuss "The Role of Calcium in the Normal and Failing Heart." The award will be presented to a graduate student for an outstanding paper in the field of pharmacology. All are welcome. Contact: 292-9042

ICS presents lecture on Chinese women's poetic communities

The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past” Lecture Series will continue at 2:30 p.m. Friday (2/20) in 164 Jennings Hall. Jennifer Feeley, assistant professor of Asian & Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Iowa, will present “From Print to Cyberspace: Transformations in Chinese Women’s Poetic Communities, 1898-2008.” Admission is free and all are welcome. Feb. 20: Critique of Muslim Modernist Approach to the Qur'an

A specialist in Quranic exegesis, Mehmet Pacaci will present "A Critique of Muslim Modernist Approach to the Qur'an" at 5 p.m. Friday (2/20) in 010 Page Hall. Based in Washington D.C. as attaché of religious affairs at the Turkish Embassy, Pacaci will discuss Muslim modernist approaches to the Qur'an. The lecture is sponsored by the Middle East Studies Center and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Read more >

CINTAX demonstration for nonresident alien tax preparation

International students, scholars and employees who are nonresident aliens for tax purposes are invited to attend a demonstration on how to file their taxes using the CINTAX software provided through OSU. OSU Mansfield Theatre presents Inherit the Wind

The Ohio State Mansfield Theatre is presenting "Inherit the Wind," a drama by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee about evolution, creationism, and an American society struggling to balance faith and freedom. Performances are 7 p.m. Friday (2/27), 8 p.m. Saturday (2/28), and 2:30 p.m. Sunday (3/1) in Founders Auditorium on the Mansfield campus; and 7:30 p.m. Friday (3/6) and Saturday (3/7) and 2:30 p.m. Sunday (3/8) at the Columbus Performing Arts Space, 549 Franklin Ave. Tickets for Columbus shows can be purchased at the OSU Theatre Box Office, Drake Performance and Events Center, 292-2295 or one hour before each show at the Columbus Performing Arts Space. Tickets are $10 general admission and free to OSU students with ID.

Reception for Ohio State employees and their high school students

High school sophomores and juniors and their parents are invited to a reception from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday (2/26) in 001 Jennings Hall. Representatives from Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience, Human Resources and Benefits and the OSU regional campuses and ATI will discuss academic and scholarship opportunities, and university tuition benefits. Winter Weather Preparedness: Did You Know…?

Transportation & Parking Services and Facilities Operations and Development are teaming up to help you prepare for inclement weather conditions during the winter season. It takes 24 hours to clear everything after it stops snowing. Since salt is less effective below freezing, it is not applied when the temperature drops below 29F. Transportation & Parking Services snow removal priorities include campus parking lots and garages, while those of Facilities Operations and Development include major roads, sidewalks, and docks for heavy snowfalls.
