British artist, composer, and professor Ray Lee will present Siren, a spectacle of sight and sound, Thursday (2/26)-Saturday (2/28). Wander through a landscape of tall metal tripods rigged with streaking LED lights, coupled with sirens that give off harmonious, vibrating drones with a soothing effect. The Independent calls the hour-long show "A fascinating counterpoint of sound and light...of constantly shifting patterns.” Lee teaches at Oxford Brookes University. Read more >

Larsen elected chair of the anthropology section of AAAS

Clark Spencer Larsen, chair of the department of anthropology and distinguished professor of social and behavioral sciences was recently elected chair of the anthropology section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was named an AAAS Fellow in 2006. Larsen is an internationally known authority on bioarchaeology, the study of human remains from archaeological settings. His most recent book, Our Origins: Discovering Physical Anthropology, is a leading introductory textbook.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. University Senate passes resolution in support of state leadership

The University Senate on Thursday (2/12) passed a resolution in support of Gov. Ted Strickland, Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, and Senate President Bill Harris, House Speaker Armand Budish and their legislative colleagues, for their strong support for higher education during these difficult times. In the current biennial budget the State of Ohio has funded a two-year tuition freeze by providing additional dollars for higher education, the resolution stated. Additionally, in three rounds of budget cuts the governor has protected the core funding for higher education, and in the next biennial budget the elected leaders of Ohio have called for continuing support for higher education.

Puppy love: Therapy dogs bring smiles to Med Center patients, staff

Lizzy is a comfort-giver extraordinaire who makes it her mission to brighten a patient’s stay in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital. As one of 16 dogs that participate in the OSU Medical Center’s Pet Pals program, the little beagle waddles into the ward every Wednesday around 1 p.m., eager to be a substitute for a patient’s missed pet or simply a source of fun in a place known more for its sterility. TELR Research on Research Grants program proposals sought

TELR's Research on Research Grants program encourages unique partnerships between faculty and undergraduate students. For the sixth year, TELR is seeking teams to create multimedia projects, with the help of Digital Union resources, based on faculty research needs. Students and faculty apply together; the student is paid for his or her time during the summer quarter; the faculty member helps to design a digital resource he or she can use as a teaching tool, to publicize research, or to apply for grants. Applications are currently being accepted for the Coca-Cola Critical Difference for Women Research on Women Grants. Dismantling Machinal: Expressing Sex, Crime, and Punishment

In conjunction with its production of Sophie Treadwell's Machinal, the Department of Theatre and The Syndicate, the theatre graduate student organization, will host "Dismantling Machinal: Expressing Sex, Crime, and Punishment," an academic symposium devoted to Treadwell's classic American drama. The symposium will convene on the afternoon of Friday (2/27) and attend the 7:30 p.m. performance of Machinal. Presentations will commence the morning of Saturday (2/28) in the Drake Performance and Event Center. Read more >

Cancer survivors encouraged to register for Relay for Life

Ohio State’s Relay For Life kicks off at noon Saturday (5/9) at Fred Beekman Park (corner of Kenny Road and Lane Avenue) and includes a survivors lap, luminaria ceremony and other activities. The event is free to all survivors and their caregivers. The committee is encouraging cancer survivors to register prior to the event.
