Brown announces legislation to expand access to cancer treatment options

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) on Thursday (2/26) announced legislation that would protect access to treatment options for patients diagnosed with cancer. Brown’s Cancer Clinical Trials Act prevents insurance companies from denying patients participating in clinical trials coverage for the services they would otherwise receive under their health care plans. Companion legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY). According to OSU's Comprehensive Cancer Center, an estimated 20 percent of patients who attempt to enroll in clinical trials are denied coverage by their insurance. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Stulz receives 2008 Risk Manager of the Year Award from professional association

The Global Association of Risk Professionals awarded the association’s 2008 Risk Manager of the Year Award to René M. Stulz, the Everett D. Reese Chair of Banking and Monetary Economics at the Fisher College of Business. He was honored recently during the association's annual convention in New York City. Stulz is director of the Dice Center for Research in Financial Economics and has consulted for major corporations, law firms, the New York Stock Exchange, the IMF, and the World Bank. Read more >

OSU staffers take aim at roller derby

 Several Ohio State staff and graduate students have joined the "rolling revolution" of roller derby -- a colorful and fiercely contested sport where the athletes are women with monikers such as Fisti Cuffs or Anna Mossity, and the spicy tradition includes unconventional make-up and attire that give the sport a wide, if underground, appeal. They compete for the Ohio Roller Girls, the first flat-track roller derby team in the state. Read more >

Connect by Hertz drives on to OSU campus

Connect by Hertz, The Hertz Corporation’s global car sharing club, has signed its first two university clients: Ohio State and Pepperdine University. Beginning in late January, Connect by Hertz cars will be strategically placed around campus providing students, faculty and staff an environmentally-friendly, economical alternative to car ownership. The cars will be available to drivers 18 years and older with gas, maintenance, insurance and parking included in the hourly rate. OSU Marion Science Café: Physics professor to explain Large Hadron Collider

Ohio State Marion's next Science Café features Gordon Aubrecht, OSU Department of Physics, who will open discussion on the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator based at CERN on the Swiss-French border. MCC brings Lakota storyteller Dovie Thomason to campus

Dovie Thomason, a Kiowa Apache and Lakota storyteller whose tales gently dispel false images of the First Nations People of North America and replace them with traditional stories to which all cultures can relate, will conduct a public performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday (3/4) in the Hale Cultural Center. Ferrari lecturer to focus on breast cancer research

Umberto Veronesi, scientific director of the European Institute of Oncology and former Italian Minister of Health, will present "New Paradigms in the Management of Breast Cancer" at 11:30 a.m. Friday (3/6) in the Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium as the ninth recipient of the annual Marialuisa Ferrari Lectureship for Life award. Former Ohio State medical nanotechnology expert Mauro Ferrari and his family established the lectureship in honor of his first wife, who died of cancer. InterACT Presentation "A Failure to Communicate"

The Graduate School invites faculty, graduate program staff and graduate students to attend a performance of "A Failure to Communicate," an interactive and entertaining theatre piece written by Robin Post, director of the Department of Theatre’s InterAct Diversity Players, from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday (3/5) in the Roy Bowen Theatre, Drake Performance and Event Center. Office hours for help with IRB submissions

The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. The sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures.
