Kasich announces expansion to OARnet network

During his state of the state address this week, Governor Kasich announced that the Ohio Academic Resources Network, a multidisciplinary research center under Ohio State's Office of Research, will expand its network capabilities to speeds of 100 Gigabits per second. This state-led initiative will advance research and job growth across Ohio's higher education, medical research, manufacturing, engineering and technology networking corridors. Ohio public and private partners also will invest in a state-of-the-art innovation center to be located at Ohio State. The center will enable testing 100 Gbps technologies and promote the development of broadband, software and advanced technology applications.

OSU finds efficiency, savings in geothermal wells

 Scott Conlon, director of projects for OSU Facilities Design and Construction, smiles as he talks about the geothermal wells being constructed to heat and cool two building projects: The South High Rises Renovation and Addition (Park/Stradley, Smith/Steeb and Siebert halls), and William Hall Complex (between 10th and 11th avenues). Each is expect to realize a 32 percent energy savings and a combined minimum cost savings of $415,000 annually.

Provost to address University Senate Feb. 16

Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph A. Alutto will deliver his annual address to the University Senate on Thursday (2/16) at 3:30 p.m. in 103 Drinko Hall. In this year's address, entitled "Being Excellent and Becoming Eminent," Alutto will focus on recognizing and rewarding faculty achievements and supporting and enhancing faculty excellence. He will also discuss the university's strategic planning efforts and how such planning can support Ohio State's rise in reputational ranking.

Free biometric screening, chance to win Rec Sports membership

On Tuesday (2/14), do something special for yourself and your loved ones. Ohio State is supporting the Million Hearts Campaign by offering free biometric screenings to all employees, as well as information for faculty, staff, students, and the public. Screenings and information will be offered that day at several convenient locations from 8 a.m.-noon. Eligible employees in the Your Plan for Health (YP4H) program will receive five incentive points. School of Music offers jazz for your valentine

 The School of Music is presenting a series of jazz concerts in Weigel Auditorium — just in time for Valentine's Day. The Ohio State Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ted McDaniel, will be swinging on Friday (2/10) at 8 p.m. On Sunday (2/12) guest vocalist Kelly Crum Delaveris (shown here) will join the Jazz Lab for a Brazilian (Portuguese) inspired concert at 3 p.m. Tuesday (2/14) is the Jazz Workshop at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the door (cash or check only). Environmental advocates to speak following film

Following the film "Force of Nature," which focuses on Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki, local environmental advocates will discuss their motivations for activism on Friday (2/10) at 7 p.m. in the Film/Video Theater. The panel includes Kai Landis, who leads sustainability projects at the Office of Student Life; Keith Dimoff, executive director, Ohio Environmental Council; Mike Minnix, owner and president, Eartha Limited; Doug Morgan, attorney and bicycle advocate; and Shelly Casto, director of education at the Wexner Center.

Columbus Neighborhoods: Downtown and Franklinton Feb. 14

"Columbus Neighborhoods: Downtown and Franklinton" premieres on WOSU TV Tuesday (2/14) at 8 p.m. The documentary details the travails of a fledgling city during the War of 1812 and how an extensive transportation system developed with the coming of canals, the National Road, and railroads. It features many of the people who shaped the city and looks at what life's like today for people who are moving back downtown, and for families who have been in Franklinton for five generations.

February Matinees that Matter: The Long Walk to Freedom

The Long Walk to Freedom, featuring the images of photo-journalist Matt Herron, who photographed the civil rights for Time, Life, Newsweek, and National Geographic magazines will take place Thursday (2/16) from noon-1:30 p.m. in 160 Meiling Hall. This is a story of 12 ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in the civil rights movements. Moderator is Wanda Dillard. Lunch is included.

The Moritz College of Law Office of Minority Affairs is hosting Discover Law @ Moritz on Thursday (2/23) at 3 p.m. in Drinko Hall. SLIYS '12: Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars

Hands-on workshop: Using Adobe Connect

Adobe Connect can be a powerful tool for meeting with students and colleagues who cannot all be at the same location, but learning to use Connect with online resources can be disorienting. In this hybrid session on Friday (2/17) at 11:45 a.m., staff from Ohio State and Adobe will walk you through the basics of Connect meeting management, including uploading and sharing content, screen sharing, and using polling and breakout rooms. Sessions will be held at several Columbus and regional campus locations.
