Vitamin E tocotrienol supplement delays progression of advanced liver disease

New research conducted at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center suggests an alternate form of natural vitamin E delays the progression of disease in patients awaiting liver transplantation, the only definitive therapy that reduces a patient's morbidity, mortality and improves their quality of life. The study shows, for the first time, successful delivery of the vitamin — administered orally — to vital human organs such as the brain, heart, liver, skin and fatty tissue.

Ohio State kicks off RecycleMania strong

On Sunday (2/5), Ohio State kicked off Week One of RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities, by surpassing last year's diversion rate by 8 percent. OSU diverted about 26 percent of its materials from the landfill, recycling over 35.19 tons or 70,380 pounds. Eleven residence halls have challenged each other in the competition that runs through Saturday (3/31). Faculty and staff are encouraged to clean out their offices and ensure that appropriate recycling containers are available for their areas.

Feb. 27: Brazilian Nature and Our Scientific Partnerships

A symposium, "Brazilian Nature and Our Scientific Partnerships" will be held on Monday (2/27) at 8 a.m. in the Ohio Union in conjunction with the exhibit, "Flora Brasiliensis" to be displayed in the Ohio Union during the month of March. Faculty grants available for international projects

International Affairs is accepting applications for faculty grants for projects that promote the understanding of foreign countries, cultures and peoples through academic study. Additionally, in partnership with the Office of Research, OIA is seeking applications for collaborative proposals that take place in one of the Gateway countries of China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), India and Brazil and focus on Ohio State's three discovery themes: food production, supply and safety; health and well-being; and energy and the environment. Veterinarian and astronaut offers lunchtime lecture

 NASA astronaut Rick Linnehan, College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus, flew four Space Shuttle missions and conducted numerous space walks. He will speak to veterinary students about his experiences on Monday (2/20) at noon in the Veterinary Medical Center Auditorium. You are welcome to bring lunch to the free hour-long talk, which is open to the public.

CeaseFire Columbus seeks to end gun violence Feb. 20

Deanna Wilkinson, associate professor of human development and family science, will present a Department of Consumer Sciences Seminar 800, "Solving the Gun Violence Problem through Researcher-Community Partnerships: The CeaseFire Columbus initiative," at 3:45 p.m. Monday (2/20) in 251 Campbell Hall. Wilkinson founded the OSU Youth Violence Prevention Advisory Board and the Columbus Violence Prevention Collaborative.

Bachelor of Science in Public Health info sessions

University Libraries and the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching will present "Teaching Across Borders: International Course Development" on Tuesday (2/21) from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in 150 Younkin Success Center.
