OSU leaps into top 10 in Peace Corps volunteer producers

Ohio State surged four places on the Peace Corps’ annual list of the top volunteer-producing schools, placing for the first time ever among the top 10 large universities. With 80 OSU graduates currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, an increase of 9 volunteers over last year, the university ranks No. 9 and remains a solid source of alumni committed to making a difference at home and abroad. Since the agency was created in 1961, 1,666 OSU alums have served overseas, making OSU the No. 10 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers.

Events this week

Town Hall today hosts discussion on potential COTA service changes

COTA is currently analyzing several bus routes for potential changes that could include the removal of bus stops along High Street in the university district. In partnership with Ohio State’s student government organizations, COTA representatives will attend a Town Hall meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. today (2/6) in the Round Meeting Room on the third floor of the Ohio Union to gather feedback from the university community. COTA’s open comment period about these proposed changes runs through Friday (2/8. All university community members who utilize COTA service are encouraged to learn more and provide input by attending the Town Hall or visiting COTA’s website: http://www.cota.com/busstopserviceimprovement.aspx.

Modeling schizophrenia-associated cognitive dysfunction

Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of schizophrenia. Increased severity of cognitive dysfunction in patients is associated with negative functional outcomes. Unfortunately, available treatments for schizophrenia do not significantly improve the cognitive symptoms of the disorder. Gregory, Carr, National Institute of Mental Health, will highlight new research in the field Tuesday (2/12) at 11 a.m. in 35 Psychology Building.

Professor to discuss new book on American Indian studies

Chad Allen, Professor of English and Coordinator of the American Indian Studies program, will discuss his new book, Trans-Indigenous: Methodologies for Global Native Literary Studies, from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday (2/13) in 311 Denney Hall. Allen’s book offers methods based on focused comparisons of diverse texts, contexts, and traditions in order to foreground the richness of Indigenous self-representation and the complexity of Indigenous agency. This event is part of the DISCO (Diversity and Identity Studies Collective at OSU) Research and Creative Activity Series.

Guest lecturer speaks on China in Africa

China has become Africa's largest trading partner, surpassing the United States and its European partners, with commercial trade growing from $10 billion to $100 billion in the last decade. African countries increasingly provide China with energy and natural resources in exchange for investments in industry, transportation and agriculture. Moses Kiggundu, professor at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University, will examine the excitement, resentment, and the controversy provoked by the China-Africa relationship Wednesday (2/13) from noon-1 p.m. in Gerlach 375 Hall, 2108 Neil Avenue. OSU to host English teachers’ research conference 

The College of Education and Human Ecology will host National Council of Teachers of English Assembly of Research Conference 2013 on 2/15-2/17 in conjunction with OSU’s Hip Hop Literacies Conference. The conference features multiple session format options and provides an opportunity for professors, graduate students, teacher/researchers and community researchers to interact with a range of accomplished scholars working across multiple literacies. OSU students, staff and affiliated community members receive a group registration discount of 20 percent.

Young Professionals meet 2/ 20

The Young Professionals Network of Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center extends an invitation to all University employees to attend our February meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from noon-1 p.m. in the Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium. Meet other young professionals and learn more about Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. Global Gateway research grant available for graduate students

The Council of Graduate Students and the Office of International Affairs are now accepting applications for the 2013 Global Gateway Graduate Student Research Abroad Grant. The grant encourages and promotes the professional and academic development of graduate researchers at Ohio State by providing financial support for research abroad. Successful applicants will be awarded up to $1,000 to assist with travel-related expenses for research abroad. The deadline for applications is Thursday (2/28).

Introduction to Ohio State IRB Procedures and Resources

The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) is offering a workshop on Ohio State Institutional Review Board procedures and resources from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday (2/7) in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Suite 205, Room 240, 2nd Floor Prior Health Sciences Library. This introductory workshop is targeted to medical research staff and will focus on available resources, ways to avoid common submission problems, and tips for most efficiently navigating the review process. Anyone involved in preparing medical (biomedical/cancer) IRB submissions is welcome.
