Headline news

Efficiency, conservation project receives $7.1M from OAQDA

-- Ohio State has received $7.1 million in bond funding from the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority, in support of a five-building energy efficiency and conservation infrastructure upgrade project. This project is the first major step toward becoming more sustainable in our energy use campus-wide. The project, scheduled to begin in late March, will include weatherization improvements, lighting upgrades and among other measures for the Physics Research Building, Biomedical Research Tower, Scott Laboratory, Recreation and Physical Activity Center and the Veterinary Medical Center.

Songstress Natalie Cole headlines 2013 Wex-STAR fundraiser

Columbus’s Harmony Project, a choir dedicated to “service and song,” opens. This event benefits both the Wexner Center for the Arts and Ohio State’s Harding Behavioral Health’s STAR (Stress, Trauma, and Resilience) Program. Events celebrate Woody Hayes’ 100th birthday

-- As part of a university-wide commemoration, the Office of Student Life will host Anne and Woody Hayes Celebration Week from February 10-15, which marks 100 years since Woody’s birth on February 14, 1913. From their everyday life to gridiron triumphs, the week will feature events honoring the stories, traditions, and contributions of two people whose influence on Buckeye Nation remains strong to this day. Staff and students are invited to join in the celebration.

Quiet and Stupid Kid on Writers Talk

-- Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, joins the chorus of people asking us to be silent. And OSU alumnus and lecturer Alexis Martina hears Dahlynn McKowen's comments On Being a Stupid Kid, her latest edited collection of stories in the Not Your Mother's Book series. Administrative Research Council meets Tuesday (2/12)

-- The quarterly meeting of the Administrative Research Council will meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday (2/12) in 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Sharell Mikesell, associate vice president, Industry Liaison Office, will be moderating a panel of researchers and administrators actively involved with industry sponsored research.

MFA dance concert: Split Marbles

-- Part of an ongoing series of MFA dance concerts, Split Marbles includes three dance performances by Katie Aylward, Erik Speth, and Crystal Fuller. It will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday (2/14-15) and at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday (2/16) at the EMMA Lab at ACCAD, 1224 Kinnear Rd. Aylward will present a multimedia performance that explores nature within urban environments. Speth’s project looks at distance creation and community through the construction of a dance work where dancers are on opposite sides of the country. Fuller’s project is an intermedia work that deconstructs the 200-year visual history of black women’s bodies in American popular culture.

Preston to speak on role of religion in American foreign policy

-- Andrew Preston, senior lecturer in American history and fellow of Clare College at Cambridge University, will speak about “Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith” at 12:30 p.m. Friday (2/15) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Based on his recent book, Preston's lecture will trace in broad outline the historical relationship between religion and American foreign relations, and use two case studies by way of example.

USAC, Faculty Council host town hall with CampusParc

-- USAC and Faculty Council cordially invite all faculty and staff to a town hall meeting with the leadership of CampusParc from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday (2/15) in Drinko Hall’s Saxbe Auditorium. -- Jared Gardner, professor of English and film studies, will be the featured speaker at the 2012-13 Arts and Humanities Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday (2/20) at 5p.m. in the Ohio State Faculty Club’s Grand Lounge. Gardner’s lecture "Popular Serialities and Reading Communities, 1787-2012" will draw on his two recent books—The Rise and Fall of Early American Newspaper Culture and Projections: Comics and the History of 21st-century Storytelling. CCTS offers mentor training

Karla Zadnik, associate dean of the College of Optometry and an experienced research mentor, will present a training series for mentors, put on by the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science from 3-7 p.m. March 27 and April 3 2013 (must attend both sessions) in the CCTS Collaboratory, Room 240  Prior Health Sciences Library. The training will use a case-based approach to explore an intellectual framework for mentoring, and allow mentors a forum to solve mentoring dilemmas with their peers.
