Lantern judged top college paper in Ohio – again

-- For the third straight year, The Lantern won the General Excellence award in the 2013 Ohio Newspaper Association Ohio Collegiate Newspaper competition. The Lantern placed in all eight categories in the competition, results of which were announced on Feb. 14. Division A includes newspapers from Kent State, Ohio University, the University of Cincinnati and Bowling Green State University. The Lantern won the photojournalism, website and design categories; finished second in news coverage and headline writing; and took third place for sports coverage, editorial writing, and arts and entertainment.

Carmen update planned after current semester

-- Carmen will be updated just after the end of Spring semester (May 3-5). Users can expect a better experience on iPads and other small computers, and also will see big changes in the Content area as well as in all the menus and navigation bars, User Progress, and more.

To be eligible for the study, the participant must be 12 years of age or older, a non-smoker and currently taking asthma medication. Participants will receive up to $825 for their participation. Traffic/parking update

Traffic delays expected on Cannon Drive today and Thursday (2/21)

-- Expect traffic and CABS bus delays on northbound Cannon Drive from Medical Center Drive to John Herrick Drive, from about 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (2/18) because of the staging of Cramblett Hall demolition equipment. The activity will affect the far east lane of northbound Cannon Drive. Delays can be expected there again Thursday (2/21) for equipment delivery. On each day, the intersection of Cannon Drive and 10th Avenue will close for a short time around 6 p.m. Traffic officers will be onsite to direct traffic.

Pitt professor to lecture on Japanese woodblock print collection

-- Richard Smethurst of the University of Pittsburgh will explore connections between Japanese woodblock print artist Tsukioka Kogyo’s oeuvre, changing attitudes toward Noh in modern Japan, and Western interest in the art at a public lecture today (2/18) in 165 Thompson Library. The lecture is being given in conjunction with an exhibit of Kogyo’s prints: “The Japanese Noh Theatre in Woodblock: The Smethurst Collection of Prints by Tsukioka Kogyo (1869-1927),” that is on display in the library’s Special Collections Gallery through March 15.

Event celebrates Year of the Snake

-- A Chinese New Year Celebration will be held from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday (2/18) in the Hagerty Hall Lobby to celebrate the Year of the Snake. Traditional dishes, calligraphy demonstrations, a tea ceremony, musical performances and a colorful Lion Dance will be featured.

Information session on teaching in urban areas

-- Project ASPIRE, an innovative partnership between OSU’s College of Education & Human Ecology and Columbus City Schools to prepare urban educators, will host an information session from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday (2/19) in the College Commons at Ramseyer Hall. ASPIRE is specifically recruiting individuals who want to earn a master’s of Education and their initial teacher’s license in STEM (Integrated Sciences or Life Science & Chemistry preferred), middle childhood education or foreign language education (Spanish or Mandarin).

Langton to discuss constraints in fighting bad speech

 --Rae Langton, professor of philosophy at MIT, will speak about “Can We Fight Speech with Speech? Generic Speech as a Case Study" at 3:30 p.m. Monday (2/25) in 347 University Hall. Previously Langton taught at University of Edinburgh as the first female professor of philosophy in Scotland. She will discuss how social generics in language (e.g. "Girls don't do science," "Boys don't cry") can tie one's hands in countering hate speech.

Dentistry’s annual Research Day set for March 7

-- The Ohio State College of Dentistry will hold its 29th annual Research Day from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday (3/7) at the Ohio Union. Keynote speaker will be Martha Somerman, Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health, presenting "NIH/NIDCR: Health Advances Through Discoveries.”  All are welcome to attend.

March 14:  How to Create the Optimal Work Environment  

-- It is possible to create a near perfect work environment, but it takes interest, determination, and persistence. Join the John Glenn School of Public Affairs on Thursday, March 14th at 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  at the Fawcett Center for How to Create the Optimal Work Environment. This one-day seminar can help you to identify the components of a “healthy” work environment. Participants will complete an analysis of the health of  their current work environment and develop an action plan for creating, improving maintaining their own optimal work environment.
