Headline newsWINTER QUARTER COMMENCEMENT SET FOR MARCH 18Approximately 1,800 Ohio State students will earn degrees during winter quarter commencement exercises, which begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday (3/18) at St. John Arena. The commencement address will be delivered by Joseph Lynch, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of History. Honorary doctorates will be presented to Shirley Malcom, head of Education and Human Resources at the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Archibald Haller, Jr., a pioneer in modern scientific sociology. Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Arthur Hecker, retired president of research and development and scientific affairs at the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories; and Richard Smith, III, executive vice president of NetJets Aviation, Inc.

RIEDINGER TO DISCUSS LIBRARIES AT OXFORD TODAYOSU Professor Edward “Ted” Riedinger, Latin American Library Collection, will deliver “Libraries at Oxford,” an informal lecture with slides from noon-1 p.m. today (3/14) at 090 Science and Engineering Library. The event is sponsored by the Advisory Committee on Research. Riedinger was a Visiting Research Associate at the Centre for Brazilian Studies at Oxford for the autumn 2006 term and will return in the same capacity for the spring term, and has been elected a senior associate member of St. Antony’s College for Trinity. ECE HOSTS SECURE COMMUNICATION SEMINAR MARCH 15Yingbin Liang from Princeton University will present “Achieving Secure Communication Over Wireless Channels,” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (3/15) in 260 Dreese Laboratory. Liang will introduce the channel identified to model wireless multiple access communication, the techniques developed to characterize reliable communication rates under secrecy constraints, and then postulate the general coding designs essential to achieve secure communication. Liang is visiting as an ECE faculty candidate. A detailed abstract of the talk is available online. FTAD INTRODUCES TEACHING ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMSFaculty and TA Development is presenting Ohio State Teaching Enhancement Programs to bring groups of faculty and TAs together in communities to explore a variety of issues in university teaching, to enhance their own teaching, and to support the teaching of their colleagues. An OSTEP community consists of the selected 6-8 fellows plus a faculty facilitator. Each member is given modest funds to spend on professional development related to their teaching enhancement project. The 2007-08 communities will include Mid-Career & Senior Faculty Program, the Graduate Teaching Fellows Program, and the TA Coordinators Program. Apply online by Friday (4/6). FACULTY INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANTS AVAILABLEThe Office of International Affairs is soliciting applications from faculty who are proposing to collaborate with foreign scholars in preparing a research grant proposal, participate in a faculty-exchange program, develop agreements linking OSU to major foreign institutions, or complete a manuscript jointly authored with a foreign based scholar. Typical grants range from $1,500 to $2,000 ($3,000 maximum). The application deadline is Friday (4/13). Applications are available online. Eligibility is contingent upon the commitment of partial counterpart funds from other OSU or extramural sources. Grant application forms are available online. The course is taught by Terrell Morgan, OSU associate professor of Hispanic Linguistics, and is designed to introduce educators and other professionals to Ohio’s Hispanic populations. Read More > FACULTY ASKED TO TAKE BOOKSTORE SURVEY ONLINEBarnes & Noble - The Ohio State University Bookstore is seeking faculty comments, suggestions and opinions through the winter 2007 Faculty Survey. Every year, the campus bookstore surveys the faculty community on campus to better understand how well the bookstore serves their needs and to learn how it can improve its services in the future. The survey is administered by Corporate Research International, an independent market research company and all responses are anonymous to ensure confidentiality. Take the survey online. SPORTS TOURNAMENTS, EVENTS TO IMPACT PARKINGA number of major events in March will impact parking and traffic on campus. In the northwest campus area, various Ohio High School Athletic Association tournaments are being held throughout the month. These and other events in the vicinity will make parking difficult and may impact your commute to and from campus.
