Headline newsSCHOLARLY EXCHANGE FEATURES EXPERTS FROM OSU, CHINAThe James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at Ohio State is one of the early adopters and pioneers in the applications of the mobile intra-operative electron-beam radiation therapy machine called the Mobetron. The device is designed to be used in any operating room, and benefits include increased survival rates, better local tumor control, shorter treatment cycles and fewer side effects for some types of cancers. This month, as part of a scholarly exchange with China, radiation oncologists, radiation medical physicists and surgical oncologists at The James and the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center are teaching Chinese doctors how to use the device. TODAY: BOYLE TO PRESENT UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED LECTUREKevin Boyle, Humanities Distinguished Professor, OSU Department of History will present “The Splendid Dead: An American Ordeal,” at 4:30 p.m. today (3/5) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The lecture will move back in time to tell a story of two immigrant workers executed in Massachusetts 80 years ago for a murder they didn’t commit. The University Distinguished Lecture Series annually recognizes two senior faculty for their outstanding academic achievement, particularly, but not exclusively, in research, scholarship or creative activity. Read more > EFFECTIVE PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT MARCH 11Attend the “Effective Proposal Development” workshop from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday (3/11) and learn about best practices in proposal development functions. The workshop will be held in 113 Research Foundation and 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Topics include identifying funding sources, coordinating limited submissions, facilitating research collaboration, and NIH roadmap. Registration is required and is available online. OHIO STATE TO HOST FEDERAL CAREER DAY APRIL 2Ohio State is hosting a Federal Career Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday (4/2) in the Huntington Club of the Ohio Stadium. OSU has participated in a federally sponsored partnership with four other universities since 2002, providing students information about federal jobs and internships, organizing special events and arranging campus speakers. More than 50 federal agencies will be represented. Students will be able to meet with potential employers and learn more about their areas of interest. Some on-site interviews will be conducted. Read more > HANSON IS PHARMACY DISTINGUISHED LECTURER MARCH 6Glen R. Hanson, professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Utah, will present “The Neurobiology of Drug Addiction: A Disease Model,” at 11:30 a.m. Thursday (3/6) in 107 Parks Hall, as part of the College of Pharmacy Distinguished Lecture Series. Hanson is director of the Utah Addiction Center and senior advisor to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. His research aims to elucidate the basis for neurological and psychiatric disorders, with emphasis on the monoamines and neuropeptides. Contact: 292-3385. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts in Reed Hall on the Ohio State Lima campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The choir is directed by Richard Mallonee, director of choral programs. SPORTS TOURNAMENTS, EVENTS TO IMPACT PARKINGA number of major events occurring throughout March will impact parking and traffic on campus. In the northwest campus area, the Ohio High School Athletic Association Girls State Basketball Tournament will be held Thursday (3/6)-Saturday (3/8) at Value City Arena, followed by the boys state tournament starting Thursday (3/13). These activities, along with other events in the vicinity will make parking difficult and may impact your commute to and from campus. The ensemble under the leadership of Paul Sanders and accompanied by Jackie Dawson will perform works of the Classical Period (1750-1820) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, and his younger brother, Michael Haydn.
