Headline newsSLATEN NAMED OSU'S FIRST CARNEGIE JUNIOR FELLOWKevin Slaten, a Political Science and Sociology student graduating Sunday (3/16), has been selected as a 2008 Carnegie Junior Fellow - the first to receive the award at Ohio State. Slaten has conducted research at OSU with Craig Jenkins in Sociology and Alexander Thompson in Political Science. The Carnegie Junior Fellows program pairs recent graduates with Research Associates working on the Carnegie Endowment's projects such as non-proliferation, democracy building, international security, and Chinese, Russian, and Eurasian affairs. The one-year research position in Washington, D.C. will commence this August. Slaten will be working on China-related projects. Contact: collegium@osu.edu
WINTER COMMENCEMENT SET FOR MARCH 16Steven A. Davis, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Bob Evans Farms Inc., will deliver Ohio State’s winter quarter commencement address on Sunday (3/16) at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Ohio State will award honorary degrees to Roy Glauber, Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics at Harvard University and winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics; and John G. Thompson, professor of mathematics at the University of Florida. The Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Patricia Duke Robinson and Thomas E. Robinson of Troy, who have committed time and resources to many university projects. Read more > WOMEN IN SCIENCE DAY AT OSU MARCH 14Gifted and talented students in grades six-eight from school districts across Ohio and their teachers will visit campus Friday (3/14) to celebrate the 24th Women in Science Day at OSU. Female faculty and staff will present 23 different workshops based on science. Kathy Sullivan will deliver a keynote address at 11:30 a.m. at Drake Union, Main Lounge. Under the leadership of Raquel Diaz-Sprague since 1999, the program is presented annually by the Association for Women in Science of Central Ohio with support from Ohio State. Read more > TODAY: CHOOSING A SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR CHILDHuman Resources and The Women’s Place are sponsoring a Working Mothers Support Network discussion from noon-1 p.m. today (3/13) at 198 Newton Hall facilitated by Jilaine Anderson, director of the Department of Recreational Sports Age Group and Camps Program. The workshop is designed to help participants learn to choose a camp program that best suits the parent and the child. Topics will include selecting a camp most appropriate for your child's age and interests, the questions every parent should ask about a summer camp, and tips to prepare parents and children in order to have the best camp experience possible. Read more > IRB FORMS HELP SESSION MARCH 19Investigators, graduate students and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications (e.g., initial review, continuing review, amendment, event reporting) from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (3/19) in 113 Research Foundation. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will be on hand to answer questions. This particular session is targeted to researchers who submit materials to the Biomedical or Cancer IRB, but is open to all human subjects researchers. Register by using your OSU Internet ID (name.#). FILM, VIDEO SHOWCASE LOOKING FOR OHIO TALENTEntries are being accepted through Friday (3/28) for the Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, as well as its youth division for filmmakers 18 years and under. The showcase is intended to provide Ohio’s independent media artists a chance to show their work in a theatrical setting before an audience. The 2008 showcase screening is set for Saturday (5/10) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater.
