OSU CROP SCIENTISTS DISCOVER GENE THAT CONTROLS FRUIT SHAPE

Ohio State crop scientists have cloned a gene that controls the shape of tomatoes, a discovery that could help unravel the mystery behind the huge morphological differences among edible fruits and vegetables as well as provide new insight into mechanisms of plant development. The discovery was reported, as the cover article, in the Friday (3/14) issue of the journal Science. Being able to control and modify fruit shape could lead to the development of new varieties, helping growers to serve specialty markets and processors to reduce costs. Read more >

INCREASE IN CAMPUS AREA AUTO VANDALISM REPORTED

University Police are reporting an increase in thefts from autos of catalytic converters in the area surrounding the Ohio State campus. A catalytic converter is used to reduce toxic emissions from automobiles. Police ask that any suspicious individual or activities be reported immediately, such as a person walking around carrying a saw or pieces of an exhaust pipe. NPR’s Scott Simon will present "Deciding What’s Newsworthy" at 7:30 p.m. Monday (3/24) at OSU Hillel, 46 E. 16th Ave. From Ground Zero in New York to ground zero in Kabul, NPR's Peabody-Award-winning correspondent brings a well-traveled perspective to his role as host of Weekend Edition Saturday. WOSU SCHEDULES GRAND OPENING OF NEW STUDIOS

In honor of the grand opening of WOSU Public Media’s new radio studios at the Fawcett Center, WOSU will hold an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday (3/24). Guests are invited to tour the new state-of-the-art studios, meet WOSU personalities and learn more about WOSU and digital radio. OSU President E. Gordon Gee also will be a guest on WOSU 820 AM’s Open Line with Fred Andrle that morning from 10-11 a.m. and Boyce Lancaster, host of classical music on WOSU 89.7, will be broadcasting during this time as well. ALUMNI GRANTS FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

Doctoral students who have passed the candidacy examination and whose dissertation project has been approved by their advisor are encouraged to apply for the Graduate School’s Spring Quarter 2008 Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship. The deadline is Friday (4/11). MFA students are also eligible to apply for funds to support their MFA project. REGISTER FOR MINI-CONFERENCE ON EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

The Ohio State Academy of Teaching is presenting the second annual Mini-Conference on Excellence in Teaching from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Friday (4/25) at the Younkin Success Center. RETIREMENT CHOICES FORUM MARCH 19

Human Resources will offer a forum on Wednesday (3/19) for newly hired faculty and staff to help with decisions regarding their retirement choices under ARP/OPERS/STRS. The forum will take place from noon-1 p.m. in Office of Human Resources, 1590 N. High St., Suite 430. The seminar is designed for faculty and staff who have an appointment of at least 75 percent FTE and have been with the university for less than 120 days.
