OHIO STATE SLEEP EXPERTS SEEK SLEEP APNEA, DIABETES LINK

Researchers here are seeking clues to determine if maligned fat cells in certain patients are actually secreting substances which may have protective and preventive effects for certain conditions. Sleep medicine experts at the Medical Center are investigating blood glucose levels and the role of fat cells in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common sleep disorder in which breathing is interrupted for brief periods during sleep when the airway becomes occluded. HONORABLE PAUL G. CASSELL TO DELIVER LECTURE

The Criminal Justice Research Center, the Department of Sociology and the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law will host the 19th Annual Walter C. Reckless-Simon Dinitz Memorial Lecture on Monday (4/7). The event will occur from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Barrister Club located at 25 W. 11th Ave. The speaker for the evening will be the Honorable Paul G. Cassell, Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, the University of Utah, and Former Federal District Court Judge for the District of Utah, who will be lecturing on the topic, "In Defense of Victim Impact Statement: Recognizing the Proper and Important Role of Crime Victims in the Criminal Justice Process." PHISHING ALERT FROM OIT

Recently, a number of emails began circulating from a source claiming to be from Ohio State webmail team. The email asks people to submit their osu.edu email account information and password along with personal information like a birthdate. Faculty and staff should not reply to these emails. This is a phishing attempt and not a legitimate request. OSU's account management system does not request information in this format through email. WOSU SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST DURING RADIO FUNDRAISER

WOSU is seeking volunteers to help answer pledge phone calls during its spring radio fundraiser, Thursday (4/3) through Saturday (4/12). This will be the first radio fundraiser to take place from the new radio studios located in the Fawcett Center. NSF EARLY CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARD WORKSHOP

A workshop designed to help applicants develop the education/outreach portion of proposals for the National Science Foundation Early CAREER Awards will be held on Wednesday (4/2) noon-2 p.m., in the Smith Seminar Room, 1080 Physics Research Building. Participants will hear from a variety of outreach programs that are interested in collaborating with applicants for the CAREER award, which is available to untenured, tenure-track faculty. DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR COCA-COLA GRANTS

Applications are still being accepted for the Coca-Cola Critical Difference for Women Research on Women Grants. The grants are open to Ohio State faculty (up to $5,000) and advanced graduate students (up to $1,000). All materials must be received no later than Monday (4/7). INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR HONOR SOCIETY

International Affairs is seeking nominations for Phi Beta Delta, an honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. International Affairs serves as the campus representative for Phi Beta Delta, which has inducted more than 600 OSU students, faculty and staff into the honor society since its inception in 1987. MORTGAGE REFINANCING BROWN BAG APRIL 1

The Office of Human Resources will offer a brown bag on Tuesday (4/1) designed to educate on the ever-changing world of home mortgage refinancing. The session is presented by Brian Connor, Mortgage Loan Officer, Huntington Bank. He will discuss various topics such as: What does refinancing mean? When, or under what circumstances, is it worth considering? What should you expect when you apply? What should you expect when you close?
