Researchers uncover 'obesity gene' involved in weight gain response to high-fat diet
Scientists have determined that a specific gene plays a role in the weight-gain response to a high-fat diet. The finding in an animal study suggests that blocking this gene could one day be a therapeutic strategy to reduce diet-related obesity and associated disorders, such as diabetes and liver damage, in humans. The senior author of the study is Kamal Mehta, OSU professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry. Read more >

College of Pharmacy plans Research Day 2009
The annual College of Pharmacy Research Day is scheduled for Wednesday (5/20). Research Day is intended to promote interdisciplinary discussions and interactions relating to drug discovery, development and therapeutics. Open Line host Fred Andrle to retire from WOSU
WOSU Public Media Open Line host Fred Andrle will retire from WOSU Public Media on Friday (5/29). Andrle has worked at WOSU for more than 25 years, serving as host of Open Line on WOSU 820 AM for the past 20 years. He has won numerous broadcasting awards over the years including Best Columbus Radio Talk-Show Host and Radio Producer of the Year, among others, and has been honored with several community service awards. ADA Coordinator's Office offers training opportunities
Ohio State's ADA Coordinator's Office is sponsoring a series of professional development and technical assistance workshops focused on disability policy, practice as part of its services commitment. Sessions are offered throughout the year culminating in a national conference, Multiple Perspectives On Access, Inclusion & Disability in April. Workshops include the 10th Solidarity Conference, sponsored by the Disability Network of Ohio, Tuesday (4/14)-Thursday (4/16).
Spouses & same-sex domestic partners can now earn $100
Human Resources recently launched a new $100 incentive for spouses and same-sex domestic partners covered by a university medical plan. Spouses and same-sex domestic partners who wish to earn the incentive must complete their Personal Health Assessment. If they haven’t already done so, they will need to register using their PIN, which was issued when the new site was launched in October. Request a new PIN.
Young Women’s Summer Institute: Apply by April 15
The Young Women’s Summer Institute, a week-long program sponsored by the Ohio Supercomputer Center for middle-school girls in Ohio, will take place from Sunday (7/26)-Saturday (8/1) to promote computer, math, science and engineering skills as well as provide hands-on experiences. Carmen workshops and individual help available
Attend a Carmen workshop on a topic such as QuickStart, Gradebook, Quizzes, Content, and CarmenWiki. Registration is now open for sessions offered from Wednesday (3/18)-Thursday (4/9) at four locations on the Columbus campus. March 4: Chinese Studies Film Series presents Blind Shaft
The Institute for Chinese Studies Film Series will continue at 7 p.m. Wednesday (3/4) in 040 Jennings Hall with Blind Shaft (2003/93 minutes). Two friends work as casual miners in illegal mines in northern China. Desiring for money and other attractions, they plot “accidental-deaths” of other miners who they claim to be their relatives and collect their meager compensation. March 5: Athens Boy Choir, Katastrophe to perform, conduct workshop
Athens Boy Choir and Katastrophe will perform a unique multimedia, spoken word and hip-hop performance by transsexual performers, at 7 p.m. Thursday (3/5)
