This year’s three-day Out@Wex festival at the Wexner Center brings the best recent GLBT films from around the globe. Screenings include romantic Cannes festival hit Love Songs; a tour of conservative universities in Equality U (followed by a Q&A session with Interfaith Chaplain Kayla Bonewell from the film); and zombies looking for action in Berlin in Otto, or Up With Dead People. Popular radio series to feature earth scientist
Terry Wilson, OSU associate professor of earth sciences, will be featured on the syndicated radio show Earth & Sky this week. Wilson leads POLENET, a growing network of GPS trackers and seismic sensors implanted in the bedrock beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. At the American Geophysical Union meeting in December, she and her colleagues reported the first research results from POLENET. Adult Men Needed for OSU Nutritional Supplement Study. Men aged 40-65, in good health, are needed to test for possible benefits of a nutritional supplement. Although the possible supplement benefits pertain to prostate health, no physical prostate exam is required. Instead, measurements will be done on a small blood sample taken before and after a 5 week supplementation period. Subjects will be paid up to $150. Contact: researchmail@ehe.osu.edu

Reducing OSU energy requirements: Join Power Down for the Planet movement
The Office of the CIO and Facilities Operations & Development are sponsors of a movement to reduce OSU energy requirements. The primary goal is the reduction of power used by workstations and related OSU equipment by 30 percent within the next year. Students, faculty and staff can participate in this endeavor through: Committing to the pledge for Power Down for the Planet, and joining the Earth Hour 2009 event. Read more >
Gross to deliver annual Smith Lecture March 31
The Department of Physics is presenting the 47th Annual Alpheus Smith Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (3/31) in 131 Hitchcock Hall. David J. Gross, director, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and Frederick W. Gluck Chair in Theoretical Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara will deliver a public lecture, "The Coming Revolutions in Fundamental Physics." March 16-19: Practical Guide to Methods and Techniques in Biomedical Research
Ten core OSU research facilities will hold a workshop from Monday (3/16)-Thursday (3/19) to highlight methods and technologies in biomedical research. From proteomics to animal imaging and from nucleic acid sequencing to confocal microscopy the talks will focus on planning experiments, preparing samples, collecting data, and analyzing data. Registration is free but is required. Register online.
Lunch & Learn workshop addresses eating disorders
The Faculty and Staff Wellness Program is hosting a workshop, Increasing Eating Disorder Awareness to help you recognize the pressures, attitudes and behaviors that shape anorexia nervosa, binge eating and other disorders and learn where to turn for treatment. The workshop is from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday (3/11) in the Ross Heart Hospital Auditorium. Earn points toward the 2009 Incentive Program. The program is free but registration is required. College of Law seeking mock trial jurors
The Clinical Programs at the Moritz College of Law is seeking faculty, staff, students and friends interested in being jurors at mock trials to be held in the Moot Court Room in April. The judges will be sitting judges from around the state of Ohio. Jurors may hear an entire case and talk with law students and judges after the case about their verdict and impressions of the trial. Mock trials are set for Monday (4/13), Thursday (4/16), Monday (4/20) and Thursday (4/23). Choose one or all four. Each trial will last 2-3 hours and will begin at 4 p.m. at the College of Law (corner of 12th and High Street). Contact: Lynda Seelie
March 10 Open Forum: The Cultural Stimulus?
The $787 billion stimulus package has started to work its way through the economy. To take effect, a stimulus must produce an appropriate response. How could the OSU community act to contribute to the success of the stimulus package? Performance artist McCauley to perform, lead talk March 13
- Performance artist Robbie McCauley will perform "Sugar" from 7-9 p.m. Friday (3/13) at the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. Sugar brings together storytelling, social commentary, and interactive dialogue on the subject of diabetes and health care disparities.
- McCauley will also lead a brown-bag lunch discussion on participatory theater, storytelling, and social action from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday (3/13) in 311 Denney Hall. Contact: Sheila Bock.
Expanding Literacy Studies conference April 3-5
Expanding Literacy Studies, the first international, interdisciplinary conference on literacy studies organized and hosted by graduate students will be held on campus Friday (4/3)-Sunday (4/5). Sponsored by LiteracyStudies@OSU, the conference will host representatives from more than 60 institutions and six different international sites. Master Gardeners program hosts perennial workshop March 21
OSU Extension Franklin County Master Gardeners will host a workshop on perennials from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday (3/21) in 116 Howlett Hall. Cost is $40 per person or $45 per couple. The course will cover site analysis and soil preparation, designing the perennial garden, selecting plants, installing and maintaining the perennial garden, and problems and challenges faced by perennial gardeners. Head and neck cancer screenings available
Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute will offer free head and neck cancer screenings from 8 a.m.-noon on Friday (4/24) in the first-floor clinic at The James. Anyone suffering from such symptoms as persistent sore(s) of the mouth, hoarseness lasting longer than three weeks, sore throat that persists for more than six weeks, or swelling in the neck for more than six weeks is encouraged to schedule an appointment at 293-5066.
