OSU Extension reorganizes

Due to state funding reductions, OSU Extension is reducing its workforce and reorganizing operations. The restructuring will be based on a strategic plan OSU Extension completed in 2008, but will be implemented with fewer people than originally intended. The reorganization pools resources into nine areas in the state and deploys technology to increase efficiency. County-based Extension educators will now serve Ohioans in a multi-county area. Adult Men Needed for OSU Nutritional Supplement Study. Men aged 40-65, in good health, are needed to test for possible benefits of a nutritional supplement. Although the possible supplement benefits pertain to prostate health, no physical prostate exam is required. Instead, measurements will be done on a small blood sample taken before and after a 5 week supplementation period. Subjects will be paid up to $150. Contact: researchmail@ehe.osu.edu


Ohio State recognized by Greater Columbus Arts Council

The Greater Columbus Arts Council on Friday (3/6) presented its Artistic Excellence Award to the College of the Arts and Humanities for the OSU Urban Arts Space and Midnight Robbers: The Artists of Notting Hill Carnival. The $10,000 prize is given annually to an arts organization that has demonstrated innovation, risk and artistic excellence in a performance, exhibition or program. Federal agencies release guidelines for new stimulus program opportunities

The National Institutes of Health released guidelines on several new stimulus program opportunities, including: the High-End Instrumentation Grant Program, the Research Facilities Improvement Program, the Core Facility Renovation, Repair, and Improvement Program, and the NIH Challenge Grants Program. Because the two facilities-related programs have limitations on the number of applications an institution can submit, the university will develop a process for determining which proposals will go forward from Ohio State.  Eric Drake, a systems manager in the Department of Statistics, is featured in the Topspot staff spotlight in the March 5 issue of onCampus. Drake has been at Ohio State for 11 years. CCTS identifying health-related studies at OSU that engage community partners

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science Community Engagement Program is identifying health-related clinical or translational research studies that illustrate current practices in community engagement in research at OSU. Examples of community engagement in research identified from the recent CCTS investigator survey will automatically be considered for case studies. Others should contact Nancy Hood or 688-3478

Distance education, online conferencing accessibility for computer users with disabilities

Film features Argentinean Youth at Crossroads

The Center for Latin American Studies is presenting Agua (Water) as its final film of the quarter at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (3/11) in 180 Hagerty Hall. The film centers around Goyo, an open water swimming champion wrongly accused of doping in a marathon river swim, who abandoned his career and his dreams and has been hiding out in the desert. Eight years later, he returns to try to regain his title and clear his name. The film is free and is subtitled in English. Read more >

Native Theories of Children’s Development

David Lancy, Professor of Anthropology at Utah State University, will deliver "Pick When Ripe: Native Theories of Children’s Development" from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday (3/13) in the Martha King Center, 200 Ramseyer Hall. A reception will follow. Lancy is the author of several books, including Studying Children and Schools: Qualitative Research Traditions. May Week Steering Committee hosts meeting March 12

The May Week Steering Committee is hosting an informational and planning session from 1-2 p.m. Thursday (3/12) at the Ohio Union Meeting Rooms in order to expand this year's event offerings and encourage all departments to get involved. More information and a list of events currently scheduled is available online. May Week will be held Sunday (5/3)-Sunday (5/10). Apply by March 13 to be a LeaderShape cluster facilitator

Applications are now available for faculty and staff to serve as LeaderShape Cluster Facilitators from Monday (9/14)-Saturday (9/19). Facilitators are needed to work with small groups of students during the week. Training will be provided and all costs associated with the week will be covered. Download the application.
