Director Steve McQueen (no relation) makes his only stop en route to a New York premiere next Wednesday to introduce Hunger, his debut film and winner of the Caméra d'Or at the 2008 Cannes film festival. The film brings to life the fatal 1981 IRA hunger strike by Bobby Sands, surrounded by the harsh reality of the infamous Maze prison -- made familiar in Jim Sheridan’s In the Name of the Father (1993) starring Daniel Day Lewis. Gene therapy shows early promise for treating obesity
With obesity reaching epidemic levels, researchers at the OSU Medical Center are studying a potentially long-term treatment that involves injecting a gene directly into one of the critical feeding and weight control centers of the brain. The findings represent a promising new treatment for obesity that ultimately could provide a safer and more effective approach than some conventional therapies. Read more >

Overweight? Stressed? Do you think there’s a connection? Ohio State University researchers are looking for healthy men and women, ages 35-65, who are overweight (body mass index 25-40). You may be reimbursed up to $415 for your time and participation in research on how psychological stress boosts the unhealthy effects of fast foods in ways that could promote obesity and heart disease. Participation involves a screening visit (2.5 hours) and two 9 hour study days at the OSU Medical Center. Read more >

Hubbell named 2008 OVMA Veterinarian of the Year
John A.E. Hubbell, interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, received the prestigious 2008 Ohio Veterinary Medical Association Veterinarian of the Year Award recently at the Midwest Veterinary Conference. The award represents a lifetime of achievement and selfless service to the veterinary profession. Hubbell has been a mentor and leader to those at the college and among veterinary professionals. CCTS creates Research Collaboration Portal
The Center for Clinical and Translational Science has created a research collaboration portal to bring together the research community to share knowledge, resources and access to information for research opportunities and the overall research mission of the university. The SharePoint-based tool, created for all involved in the research community including those outside of the university, provides a central location for announcements, calendar items, links to articles and a wiki. Accessed from the CCTS Web page, users must have a Med Center logon ID which can be obtained by contacting Bob Rice.
March 12: AAAS, Geography host Serving the Community through Mapping
Students in a Geography service learning course have been working with the Near East Side community to develop maps that identify issues around access to healthcare, food, major employment centers, and public transportation and to identify historical landmarks and points of neighborhood pride. You are invited to listen as the students present their research and newly-created maps, from 9:15-11 a.m. Thursday (3/12) at the AAAS Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. April 11 deadline for Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship
The Graduate School’s Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship Program provides up to $2,000 to support the research and scholarship of doctoral or MFA candidates in a terminal degree program for their dissertations or theses. 4-H license plates available -- just in time for Ohio 4-H Week
When 4-H began in 1902, the automobile was still a novelty. Now, Ohio's car owners can show their support for one of the largest youth development programs in the nation by purchasing a 4-H specialty license plate, available just in time for Ohio 4-H Week, being recognized through Saturday (3/14). For every 4-H license plate ordered, $15 of the annual fee goes to support the 4-H program statewide. Read more >
