Cells get two chances, not just one, to fix their mistakes

Cells have two chances to fix the same mistake in their protein-making process instead of just one, a so-called proofreading step, that had previously been identified, according to new research. Better knowledge of the mechanism behind these occasional mistakes could increase understanding of various disease processes, especially in neurodegenerative disorders, some of which scientists suspect are associated with mutated proteins, Ohio State researchers say. Overweight? Stressed? Do you think there’s a connection?
Ohio State University researchers are looking for healthy men and women, ages 35-65, who are overweight (body mass index 25-40). You may be reimbursed up to $415 for your time and participation in research on how psychological stress boosts the unhealthy effects of fast foods in ways that could promote obesity and heart disease. Participation involves a screening visit (2.5 hours) and two 9 hour study days at the OSU Medical Center. Read more >

During spring break, OSUToday will be published on Monday and Thursday only, starting with the Thursday (3/19) issue. OSUToday will run on Monday (3/23) and Thursday (3/26) and will resume daily publication on Monday (3/30). There will be no Friday (3/20) edition. Contact: OSUToday@osu.edu

Woodruff construction to impact Commencement traffic

Faculty and staff planning to attend Winter Commencement Sunday (3/22) at St. John Arena are advised to allow additional time for driving and parking. Construction along Woodruff Avenue has closed the westbound lanes near St. John. Two-way traffic is maintained in the eastbound lanes but delays are expected. Tuttle Park Place is closed at Lane Avenue. Traffic may enter campus at Lane and Neil as a detour. Signage and staff will be available to guide commencement guests to appropriate parking locations. The north Arena lots off Lane Avenue are reserved for guests with disability placards on a first-come, first-served basis. Read more >

Fisher College kicks off Center for Real Estate Education & Research Mentor Program

The Center for Real Estate Education & Research in the Fisher College of Business launched its Real Estate Mentor Program last week. The unique program teams students with real estate industry professionals in a one-on-one relationship. The mentors will provide help on everything from guidance and advice for narrowing down a student’s career path, help on school projects and case competitions, help to expand the student’s network of professional contacts in the industry and notifying the student about possible job or internship leads or openings. Research Seminar: Addressing Cancer Health Disparities in Appalachia

The fourth Annual 2009 Appalachia Community Cancer Network Research Seminar, designed to highlight community-based participatory research conducted in Appalachia, will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday (4/1) at the Embassy Suites in Dublin. All researchers, community leaders, cancer control advocates, public health professionals and those interested in understanding cancer health disparities are invited to attend. OSU Police partnering with Franklin County DUI Taskforce for St. Patrick’s Day enforcement

OSU Police are partnering with the Franklin County DUI Taskforce to help keep our roadways safe this St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday (3/17). Additional officers were working in an overtime status, throughout the weekend (March 14-15) and will be again on St. Patrick’s Day, looking for impaired and aggressive drivers. Everyone is encouraged to plan ahead and celebrate responsibly. Designate a sober driver or take a cab to your St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Contact: Capt. Eric Whiteside

ASFW hosts discussion on centered leadership March 19

The Association of Staff and Faculty Women will host an informal discussion, "Centered Leadership... How Talented Women Thrive" from noon-1 p.m. Thursday (3/19) at The Women’s Place, 400 Stillman Hall. Participants are encouraged to read an article, available on the ASFW Web site, before the discussion. Preregistration is not necessary. The Women’s Place is a co-sponsor. CAPA and OSU Theatre offer faculty/staff discount to Godspell

CAPA and the Department of Theatre are presenting Godspell, one of the longest running off-Broadway musicals of all time, on Thursday (4/16)-Sunday (4/19) at the Southern Theatre. With the Episcopal Hymnal and the Gospel According to St Matthew as inspiration, this whimsical rock musical is a blend of songs, dance, mime, charades, and vaudeville routines. College of Law seeking mock trial jurors

The Clinical Programs at the Moritz College of Law is seeking faculty, staff, students and friends interested in being jurors at mock trials to be held in the Moot Court Room in April. The judges will be sitting judges from around Ohio. Jurors hear an entire case and talk with law students and judges after the case. Mock trials are set for Monday (4/13), Thursday (4/16), Monday (4/20) and Thursday (4/23). Choose one or all four. Each trial will last 2-3 hours and will begin at 4 p.m. at the College of Law (corner of 12th and High Street). Contact: Lynda Seelie

Try Rec Sports for free during finals week

Recreational Sports is welcoming any OSU affiliate to take advantage of its free week today (3/16)-Sunday (3/22). Recreational facilities are free with valid university ID. Family members are welcome at the RPAC or ARC during observed Family Hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Stop by the RPAC Welcome Center or the ARC front desk with ID and register.
