Microscope reveals how bacteria “breathe” toxic metals
Researchers are studying some common soil bacteria that “inhale” toxic metals and “exhale” them in a non-toxic form. The process is called respiration, and it’s how living organisms make energy, explained Brian Lower, OSU assistant professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources. The bacteria might one day be used to clean up toxic chemicals left over from nuclear weapons production decades ago. Read more >
Reducing OSU energy requirements: Join Power Down for the Planet movement
The Office of the CIO and Facilities Operations & Development are sponsors of a movement to reduce OSU energy requirements. One goal is the reduction of power used by workstations and related OSU equipment by 30 percent within the next year. Students, faculty and staff can participate through committing to the Pledge for Power Down for the Planet and joining the Earth Hour 2009 event. Read about the video challenge.
Panel discussion to address Jews and Civil Rights: Law, Action, Ethics
Ohio State’s Melton Center for Jewish Studies and Moritz College of Law are presenting the 21st Annual Pearl and Troy Feibel Lecture on Judaism and the Law, at 7 p.m. Sunday (3/29) at Wexner Heritage Village, 1151 College Ave. A panel discussion, “Jews and Civil Rights: Law, Action, Ethics,” will focus on Jewish participation in the Civil Rights movement and the social and political activism shared by African Americans and Jews during the 1960s. Jules Pretty to speak on the World Food System
Jules Pretty, professor from the University Essex Center for Environment and Society, will deliver "Sustainable Agriculture and the State of the World Food System" at 2 p.m. Friday (3/20) in 333 Kottman Hall (with video link to 123 Williams Hall on the Wooster campus). His most recent book of essays is The Earth Only Endures: On Reconnecting with Nature and Our Place In It (2007). Classified Civil Service rules for recruitment and selection to be updated
Human Resources has drafted revised Classified Civil Service rules related to recruitment and selection, including: applications; examinations; eligible lists; appointments; transfers and promotions; definitions of terms; and procedure for adoption, amendment or rescission of rules. Review the draft rules online at hr.osu.edu/ccsmod.aspx. Send comments to ccsmodernization@hr.osu.edu by Wednesday (4/1).
Mershon Center seeks study abroad applicants
The Mershon Center for International Security Studies offers the Ralph D. Mershon Study Abroad Scholarship to support undergraduates who wish to enhance their educational experience by studying in a foreign country. Students are encouraged to take foreign language courses, especially those deemed critical for national security, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Persian, and others. Priority will be given to students who are preparing for a career related to international security studies. Scholarships of up to $2,000 each will be awarded. Apply by Friday (4/10). Read more >
Health, Race & Research conference March 30-31
The College of Public Health will co-sponsor "Health, Race & Research: Community Engagement to Eliminate Health Disparities," Monday (3/30)-Tuesday (3/31) at the Blackwell Conference Center. Other co-sponsors are the Center for Minority Health in the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health and Ohio State's Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Today is deadline for Stone Lab scholarships, jobs
Stone Lab, OSU’s Island Campus on Lake Erie, offers more than 30 hands-on, field-based science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators. Classes include one-week, three credit introductory courses and five-week, five credit upper-level courses, all covered by the faculty, staff and dependent tuition assistance programs. Scholarships and part-time jobs are also available, however the deadline to apply is 5 p.m. today (3/17). Read more >

CABS runs reduced service during quarter breaks. Information regarding CABS spring break service, beginning on Friday (3/20), can be found at Transportation & Parking Services' web site.
Sports tournaments, events to impact parking
In the northwest campus area, the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournaments will occur throughout March, impacting parking and traffic on campus. These events, along with other events in the vicinity will make parking difficult and may impact your commute to and from campus.
