Governor proclaims today Women in Science Day; annual event taking place at OSU

Gov. Ted Strickland has proclaimed today (3/19) as Women in Science Day in Ohio in recognition of the 25th annual Women in Science Day to be held on campus today. Approximately 300 gifted and talented girls from across Ohio will visit campus to attend the event and participate in workshops offered by OSU faculty and staff. Honorary Chair Kathryn Sullivan will deliver the awards to winners of the contest “Honoring Women in Science through History” at noon at Drake Union. Contact: Raquel Diaz-Sprague or 268-1488. Surgery researcher Peter Nau recognized by international consortium

Peter Nau, a resident in the Department of General Surgery, was recently awarded the Surgical Technology Assessment and Outcomes Research Grant by the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. The AHPBA is an international consortium of more than 600 hepatobiliary surgeons. His project seeks to identify a novel approach to repairing injuries of the biliary system. He is mentored by Scott Melvin, OSU professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Nau will travel to Argentina in 2010 to present his findings at the international AHPBA meeting.

Winter Commencement video stream and WOSU TV broadcast

A live video stream will be available of the Winter Commencement 2009 ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday (3/22), for family members and friends who are unable to attend the event. Guidelines for Centers for Innovation and Innovation Group proposals now available

Submission guidelines for Innovation Group and Center for Innovation proposals are now available online. The proposal submission deadline is Monday (4/13) for Innovation Groups and Thursday (4/30) for Centers for Innovation. This new Ohio State program was developed to foster broad multidisciplinary approaches to some of society’s most pressing problems. Contact: weisenberger.21@osu.edu or 247-4764

University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio annual meeting April 8-9

Ohio State is a founding member of the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio. Interested faculty, staff and students are encouraged to register for the upcoming annual conference to be held Wednesday (4/8)-Thursday (4/9) at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. Register online. The Institute for Energy and Environment will sponsor the first 35 students (undergraduate or graduate) who submit work for a poster session to be held April 8. CWC Seed Grant opportunity

The Climate, Water, & Carbon Program is announcing its annual call for seed grants, open to all OSU faculty and researchers with PI status. This year's proposals are expected to be funded at about $50,000 and are due Friday (5/1). For details, visit the CWC projects web page or contact Doug Alsdorf.

Jacoby to present “Say It Ain’t So, Where Did America’s Rationality Go?”

New York Times bestselling author Susan Jacoby will discuss her latest book, The Age of American Unreason, at 7 p.m. Wednesday (4/1) in 001 Jennings Hall. Jacoby argues that a mutant strain of public ignorance, anti-rationalism, and anti-intellectualism has developed over the past four decades and threatens the future of American democracy.
