Gee to lead effort to maximize energy research
President E. Gordon Gee will help guide a national initiative that unleashes public universities to help increase energy independence and spur economic growth. The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) launched the effort, which brings together 15 universities from across the country in recognition of the unique role America's public research universities can play in achieving energy independence. The Energy Initiative Advisory Committee will be co-chaired by President Gee and Elsa A. Murano, president of Texas A&M University. Read more >
Study: Racial biases fade toward members of own group
White people don't show hints of unconscious bias against blacks who belong to the same group as them, a new study suggests. But this lack of bias only applied to black people in their group, according to the findings. Most white people in the study still showed evidence of some unconscious bias towards blacks who were in an opposing group, or who were unaffiliated with either group. "The results suggest that when we share some kind of identity with a group of people, we automatically and immediately feel positively toward them, regardless of race," said Jay Van Bavel, co-author of the study and post-doctoral fellow in psychology. Four Ohio State faculty recognized by University System of Ohio
Governor Ted Strickland and Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut recognized University System of Ohio faculty members with Ohio's first Faculty Innovator Awards on Tuesday (3/24). Bonnie Kirkpatrick (Nursing), Marc H. Smith (Fisher), Bruce W. Weide (Engineering), and Timothy J. Long (Engineering) were among 10 honored for introducing digital course materials that help make textbooks more affordable. Read more >
Office of Treasurer changes name
The Office of the Treasurer is now known as the Office of Financial Services, and is responsible for coordinating and executing the receipt, disbursement, custody and safeguarding of financial assets of the University. This new name captures the diverse mission of the office, which is subdivided into the Office of the University Bursar (Fees and Deposits, Student Loan Services and Accounts Receivable), Treasury Management, Treasury Accounting and Debt Management. Take the Power Down pledge to beat Michigan
The Power Down for the Planet pledge web site is now open and the competition between sponsoring universities has begun. Ohio State is facing off against Purdue, Iowa, Cornell and arch-rival Michigan to gather the most pledges. Ohio State sponsors – the Office of the CIO and Facilities Operations and Development – encourage the reduction of OSU energy requirements, and would like to reduce power used by workstations and related equipment by 30 percent within the next year. Students, faculty and staff can participate through committing to the Pledge for Power Down for the Planet. Read more >
Support for patients and families living with lung cancer
Correction: The James' new support service will be offered on the fourth Wednesday of each month, not the fourth Monday as previously reported. The service will provide lung cancer patients and their families with emotional and peer support, education and advice on the practical issues of living with lung cancer. Facilitated by clinical staff of The James, the support group will provide a safe and caring environment in which to discuss the personal impact of lung cancer from both a patient and caregiver perspective. Sessions will occur the fourth Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Longaberger Alumni House. Contact JamesCare for Life at 293-6428.
Expanding Literacy Studies conference April 3-5
Expanding Literacy Studies, the first international, interdisciplinary conference on literacy studies organized and hosted by graduate students will be held on campus Friday (4/3)-Sunday (4/5). Sponsored by LiteracyStudies@OSU, the conference will host representatives from more than 60 institutions and six different international sites. Office hours for help with IRB submissions
The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4pm on Wednesday (4/1)in 635 Fry Hall. Reminder: Research on Research application deadline April 10
The application deadline for TELR's Research on Research: Student-Faculty ePartnerships Program is Friday (4/10). In this program, student-faculty pairs work together on a research project. In addition, students learn multimedia skills and construct a digital portfolio about the research. Read more >
Sports teams advance in tourneys, coaches reel in awards
The month of March has brought advances and awards to the Department of Athletics. Women's Pistol completed an undefeated season by winning the NRA Intercollegiate National Championship, and Men's Ice Hockey received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will play Boston University this weekend. Women's Gymnastics advanced to the NCAA Central Regional, which the Buckeyes will host Saturday (4/4) in St. John Arena. OSU played host for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, and the Buckeye women's team won both games and advanced to face Stanford on Saturday (4/4) in Berkeley, Calif., in the Sweet Sixteen. In terms of honors, Head Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan was named National Coach of the Year and his Assistant Lou Roselli was named National Assistant of the Year. Read more >
