Iraqi-American jazz trumpeter Amir ElSaffar comes to the Wexner Center April 10 for a concert in a cabaret-style setup with table seating and a cash bar. ElSaffar deftly connects his ancient cultural heritage with forward-thinking jazz concepts in an enticing fusion of rhythm and melody from the past and present. His top-notch band includes two members from the Dakshina ensemble — saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and bassist Carlo DeRosa — as well as Zafer Tawil on oud, violin, and percussion, and Nasheet Waits on drums.

Social isolation makes strokes more deadly, according to study
New research in mice suggests that social isolation may promote more damaging inflammation in the brain during a stroke. Researchers found that all the male mice that lived with a female partner survived seven days after a stroke, but only 40 percent of socially isolated animals lived that long. In addition, the paired mice suffered much less brain damage than did the surviving solitary mice. Kate Karelina, a doctoral student in neuroscience, was the lead author. Read more >

The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is enrolling participants in a research study to test an investigational device to prevent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You may be eligible if you are 18-75 years of age, you need to take medication daily to control GERD, you have not had any surgery to treat GERD, and you do not have Barrett’s esophagus. Lee named ACE Fellow
Ken Lee, professor of Food Science and Technology, has been named an Academic Fellow of the American Council on Education (ACE) for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Academic Fellows Program, established in 1965, is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration. Lee was one of 38 Fellows selected in a national competition. He will return to Ohio State for at least one academic year after completion of the Fellowship so that his newly developed expertise can be used to enrich the university. Read more >

Ohio State to host summer honors institute for gifted students
The College of Engineering will host the 2009 Summer Honors Institute for Gifted Students during three sessions (July 6-10, July 13-17 and July 20-24) on the Columbus campus. This Summer Institute will provide gifted high school students the opportunity to be both introduced to the fundamentals of engineering and immersed in a robotics experience that will serve as an exciting, popular vehicle for the delivery of those fundamentals. Ohio State and IMG form athletics multi-media rights partnership
The Ohio State University Department of Athletics today announced it has reached an agreement with IMG College, a division of IMG Worldwide, and RadiOhio Inc., for a 10-year multi-media rights partnership. The deal, valued at $110 million, is the largest athletics multi-media rights guarantee in collegiate sports history. Currently, IMG manages OSU’s publishing rights, and RadiOhio controls the university’s radio rights. Under the terms of the new agreement, the partnership will manage and market all rights associated with publishing, radio game play-by-play and coaches’ shows, and live and delayed television and coaches’ TV shows excluded from conference or NCAA contracts. Understanding OSU’s digital information landscape
The Center for Knowledge Management, with support from the arts and sciences, libraries, architecture, archives, medical center, and the data warehouse is spearheading a campuswide study to assess the interconnectedness of the university's overall information enterprise. The study seeks to better understand where data sets reside and how they interact with each other so that gaps can be identified and redundancies eliminated. Read more >

A Moonlight on the Marsh seminar titled Peak Oil, Energy Return on Investment and Your Financial Future will be given by Charles A.S. Hall of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, at 4 p.m. today (3/30) in the lobby of the Heffner Wetland Research Building at the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, 352 W. Summer Linguistic Institute for youth scholars
Linguistics is offering a new program for summer scholars. The Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars (SLIYS) is a week-long event designed for high school students interested in the study of language. The institute is open to students from entering sophomores to seniors who are interested in foreign languages. Three sessions will be held on the Columbus campus during July 2009. Room Change for ORRP Office Hours
The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies, and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be 2-4 p.m Wednesday (4/1) in 652 Fry Hall (note room change). Think on your feet at Hopkins exhibit
Walkscape OSU: A Project With Legs is a prospective exhibit and mindspace for a campus-wide initiative on bipedal creativity. The work, produced by One Creative University, will be on display at Hopkins Hall Gallery today (3/30) through Wednesday (4/1).
