On Friday, Ellen Kuras (featured in a 2006 retrospective of her cinematography on such films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) returns to the Wexner Center to introduce her Oscar-nominated directorial debut, The Betrayal (2008), a gripping documentary about a Laotian family forced to flee their homeland, only to arrive in Brooklyn and face starting a new life. The film (also screening Saturday) shows the challenges of war and emigration, as well as the resilience of family ties. Read more >

Provost launches search for Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education

Provost Joe Alutto has appointed a screening committee to review applications for the new role of vice provost and dean for undergraduate education. The person selected will guide the development of programming to provide appropriately challenging academic experiences for undergraduate students. Javaune Adams-Gaston, vice president for Student Life; Peter Koltak, president, Undergraduate Student Government; professor Carl Zulauf, Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (Council on Enrollment and Student Progress); and vice provosts Carole Anderson, Joan Leitzel, Patrick Osmer, and W. Randy Smith will serve as the screening committee for the search. An internal search will begin immediately, and applications are due Friday (4/24). The position will be available Wednesday (7/1). GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE STUDY. The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is enrolling participants in a research study to test an investigational device to prevent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You may be eligible if you are 18-75 years of age, you need to take medication daily to control GERD, you have not had any surgery to treat GERD, and you do not have Barrett’s esophagus. Mosley-Thompson elected to new American Geophysical Union Fellows

Ellen Mosley-Thompson, professor of geography, senior research scientist and co-founder of the Ice Core Paleoclimate Research Group at the Polar Research Center, was recently elected to the 2009 class of American Geophysical Union Fellows. Fellows of AGU are members who have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and Space Sciences. Mosley-Thompson joins a group of 55 Fellows from around the world and is the only representative from Ohio State in the 2009 class. She will be recognized in Toronto, Canada, during the Joint Assembly, in May. Read more >

Today: Gross to deliver annual Smith Lecture

The Department of Physics is presenting the 47th Annual Alpheus Smith Lecture at 7:30 p.m. today (3/31) in 131 Hitchcock Hall. David J. Gross, director, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and Frederick W. Gluck Chair in Theoretical Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara will deliver a public lecture, "The Coming Revolutions in Fundamental Physics." HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at Ohio State is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. Stage 2 hypertension is an advanced form of high blood pressure whereby the systolic blood pressure, or top number, is >160 or a diastolic blood pressure, or the bottom number, has a value of >100. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participants will receive study related care, study medication and lab tests at no charge. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. The Melton Center for Jewish Studies and Mershon Center for International Security Studies are presenting "Myths and Facts about the Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy," a brown bag lunch discussion with Mitchell G. Bard at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/1) in 120 Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Bard is a foreign policy analyst who lectures frequently on U.S.-Middle East policy and the director of the Jewish Virtual Library, the world’s most comprehensive online encyclopedia of Jewish history and culture. The Office of Research will host two information sessions to discuss and answer questions about available federal stimulus funding. Visiting professor to deliver “Beyond Futurism” April 2

The Department of French and Italian is hosting Pierpaolo Antonello, associate professor of Italian at the University of Cambridge, for the first two weeks of spring quarter. He will deliver “Beyond Futurism: Bruno Munari’s Useless Machines,” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (4/2) in 191 Mendenhall. The talk will be delivered in English and is open to the public. Antonello also will teach a two-week seminar, “Italian 694: New Impegno: Post-ideological Approaches to Ethics and Socio-political Commitment in Contemporary Italian Culture,” from 2:30-5:18 p.m. Wednesday (4/1) and Wednesday (4/8) -- in Italian. Critical Difference professional development grants

Professional Development and Women of Color Advancement Grants are available for women faculty and staff continuously employed by Ohio State for at least one year, and students (graduate/professional students with a 3.0 GPA and undergraduates with a 2.5 GPA). Grants can be used for professional development activities, research, etc. Significant financial need is a key consideration. Applications are available online and are due Thursday (4/16).

MCC Storyteller workshop today, performance April 1

Three new exhibitions to open at the Wexner Center

The Wexner Center's spring exhibitions begin Wednesday (4/1) with an opening celebration from 5-8 p.m. The exhibitions include the first solo show in a U.S. museum of the works of South African artist Robin Rhode; the largest grouping of the installation-based and video works of choreographer William Forsythe; and the only U.S. venue for a show spotlighting architecture firm COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The application deadline for TELR's Research on Research: Student-Faculty ePartnerships Program is Friday (4/10). In this program, student faculty pairs work together on a research project.
