Transition in University Libraries
Vice Provost and Director of University Libraries Carol Pitts Diedrichs has announced her plans to retire on Jan. 31, 2016. Diedrichs joined our faculty in 1987 and rose through the administrative ranks to become assistant director for University Libraries’ Collections and Technical Services Division. She served as the University of Kentucky’s dean of libraries from 2003-2009, and returned to Ohio State in 2010 as director of University Libraries.

Lonnie King named Vet of the Year
Lonnie King was honored with the 2014 Veterinarian of the Year award at the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association’s annual Midwest Veterinary Conference. Dean of the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, King received the association’s highest honor in recognition of his contributions to the field of veterinary medicine spanning more than four decades.

Investiture: Two Scotts lead the university
When Edward Orton left the Ohio State presidency in 1881, he was succeeded by two similarly named men who had similarly short terms in office: Walter Scott and William Scott. Each served Ohio State for roughly two years, as the young university continued to grow into what it has become today.

Fisher College MBA candidate in spotlight
Full-time MBA candidate Natalie Megrabyan is the subject of a Forté Fellow Spotlight part of the Forté Foundation, a nonprofit consortium of leading companies and business schools focused on launching women into fulfilling, significant careers through access to business education, opportunities and a network of professionals. Megrabyan discusses why she chose to pursue her degree as well as her experience at Fisher, a Forté Foundation sponsor school for the 2014-2015 academic year.

R. James Milgram, emeritus professor of mathematics at Stanford University and one of the original members of the Common Core Validation Committee, will speak on the implications of common core for college and graduate education on Thursday (3/5) at 4:30 p.m. in EA160. Naylor Memorial Lecture in South Slavic Linguistics
The annual Kenneth E. Naylor Memorial Lecture in South Slavic Linguistics will take place Friday (3/6) from 4:15-5:45 p.m. in Thompson Library, 11th floor. Joseph Schallert, associate professor of Slavic Linguistics, University of Toronto, will deliver “Observations on the Lexicon of the Earliest Macedonian Vernacular Gospels (Konikovo and Kulakia Gospels).”

Glaser and guests present all-Beethoven recital
Columbus Symphony Orchestra members Leonid Polonsky, violin, and Wendy Morton, cello, will join professor Steven Glaser, piano, to present an all-Beethoven program on Monday (3/9) at 8 p.m. in Weigel Hall Auditorium. Enjoy the “Kreutzer” Sonata for Violin and Piano and the “Archduke” Trio in B-flat Major. This concert is free and open to the public.

Zeckhauser to speak on 'wisdom of crowds'
Richard Zeckhauser, Frank P. Ramsey Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will discuss “The Wisdom of Crowds and the Stupidity of Herds” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (3/11) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Zeckhauser’s seminal contributions to decision theory and behavioral economics include the concepts of status quo bias, quality-adjusted life years, and the analytics of ignorance.

OSC to host XSEDE workshop telecast
The Ohio Supercomputer Center on west campus is serving as a satellite location for a two-day XSEDE HPC Workshop: MPI, today (3/4)-Thursday (3/5). XSEDE, the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment, is a National Science Foundation high performance computing initiative. The workshop will be telecast to several sites across the nation, including OSC.

Developing Effective Presentation Skills
UCAT is offering “Developing Effective Presentation Skills” on Monday (3/9) from 12:30-2 p.m. in 150 Younkin Success Center. In this workshop, participants will examine three essential components of an effective presentation: planning content, planning delivery, and establishing an emotional connection with students.
