Magnets can control heat, soundSponsor

Ohio State researchers have discovered – for the first time ever – that a magnet can control heat. “This adds a new dimension to our understanding of acoustic waves,” said Joseph Heremans, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology and professor of mechanical engineering. “We’ve shown that we can steer heat magnetically. With a strong enough magnetic field, we should be able to steer sound waves, too.”

2015 research mentor award winners

The Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor and Outstanding Research Mentor Awards, selected by a student committee, recognize exceptional faculty, postdoctoral, or graduate student mentorship of undergraduate researchers who present at the Denman Forum. The 2015 Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentors are: Katherine Coffman, Economics; Timothy Gregory, History; Jessica Lerch, Neuroscience; Jose Otero, Pathology; and Marcos Sotomayor, Chemistry and Biochemistry. The 2015 Outstanding Research Mentors are: Julian Koenig in Psychology and Jason Macrander in EEOB.

Advances in Veterinary Medicine Research Day

Drums Downtown XI presents Move

The popular Drums Downtown, featuring the Ohio State Percussion Ensemble, Department of Dance, and Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design, celebrates its 11th year of innovative collaboration, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday (4/3)-Saturday (4/4) at the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theater, 77 S. High St. This year’s program, Move, will highlight works inspired by movement relating to dance, percussion and the visual arts. Tickets at 292-2295.

Korean Wind and Stream April 3

For its inaugural year, Ohio State’s Sungkyu Chris Lee Korean Performance Program brings the sounds and sights of traditional Korean performance to Columbus with Korean Wind and Stream. Cancer Genomics Conference April 10-11

Renowned cancer experts from Ohio State and across the country will present the latest updates on using genomics to guide clinical therapy at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Translational Oncology, Friday (4/10)-Saturday (4/11) at the Biomedical Research Tower. The CME-accredited program will include perspectives on timely topics such as biologic and genomic heterogeneity, molecular markers in the clinic and the opportunities for Precision Cancer Medicine.

Carmen Bootcamp applications due April 17

The eLearning Support team is accepting applications for the May 2015 Carmen Bootcamp to be held on campus Tuesday (5/19)-Wednesday (5/20). It is appropriate for instructors preparing to teach a face-to-face course summer or autumn terms.The agenda includes best practices, demos of how to use tools effectively, and more.
