Headline newsSIX NAMED DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS-- Nineteen Ohio State faculty have been honored this spring as recipients
of the 2007 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished
Scholar Award and the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service.
Those receiving the awards will be recognized today-Wednesday (4/11)
in OSUToday. Receiving the Distinguished Scholar Award, in recognition
of exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have
compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger
faculty who have demonstrated great scholarly potential, are:
SMOOT TO DELIVER SMITH LECTURE APRIL 12George F. Smoot, 2006 Nobel Laureate, will present the 2007 Alpheus Smith Lecture at 8 p.m. Thursday (4/12) in Hitchcock Hall. Smoot is a research physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Smoot and John Mather share the Nobel Prize for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic micro-wave background radiation. Contact: hagerman.1@osu.edu PAUL KENNEDY TO ADDRESS REFORM OF UNITED NATIONSPaul Kennedy, Dilworth Professor of History and director of International Security Studies at Yale University, will discuss “Reforming the United Nations: Mission Impossible?” at 4 p.m. Thursday (4/12) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. Kennedy was Secretariat to the International Commission on the Long-Term Future of the United Nations. Swers, assistant professor in Georgetown University’s Department of Government, will discuss her book “Women and Politics: Paths to Power and Political Influence” at the 2007 Deborah Jones Merritt BookMarks Lecture, at 4 p.m. Tuesday (4/24) in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Swers’ research and teaching interests encompass Congress, women and politics, and issues of representation. MEZEY IS CREATIVE READING SERIES GUESTThe OSU Creative Writing Program Reading Series is presenting a free public reading with Robert Mezey at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/11) in 311 Denney Hall Commons Room. Mezey’s poems, prose and translations have been appearing since 1953 in many journals, including New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and Harper’s. His poems can be found in many anthologies and textbooks, and some have been translated and published in Bosnia, Spain, Italy, Israel, Japan and Greece. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under; receive $2 off if you bring a canned food item. Hosted by Human Resources, meetings will be held from noon-1 p.m. every Tuesday for 10 weeks. The cost for the program is $110 for new members and $100 for current or lifetime members with more than five pounds to lose.
