Headline newsTHREE PROTEINS MAY PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN NERVE-CELL REPAIRSome mature brain cells can grow new extensions when the amount of three particular proteins on their surface increases, a new OSU study shows. The research examined three related receptor proteins, called GPR3, GPR6 and GPR12, on nerve cells in the brains of rats. The findings suggest that these three proteins could be important targets for treating stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries and also neurodegenerative diseases. Read More >
RESEARCHER TO MAKE SUPERCOMPUTERS COMPUTE EVEN FASTERA prestigious award from the National Science Foundation will help Umit Catalyurek design new tools to speed up the analysis of massive data sets that can be untangled - and therefore understood - only by using extremely powerful computers and supercomputers. The OSU assistant professor of biomedical informatics and electrical and computer engineering has earned one of NSF's Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards, which recognize a young researcher’s dual commitment to scholarship and education. He will receive $400,000 in funding over five years for his project, titled “Scalable combinatorial scientific computing.” Read More > FIRST CAMPUS MUSIC HOP SET TO BEGIN TODAYThe first Campus Music Hop set for today (4/12)-through Sunday (4/15) will feature a variety of live musical performances in more than a dozen locations along or near High Street in the University District. At the heart of the music hop will be Ohio State’s 30th Annual Jazz Festival. The music will include jazz in the university’s Weigel Auditorium, and the blues, hip hop and rock’n’roll at restaurants and nightspots along High Street. Many of the performances will be free.
