Headline newsKNOCKING OUT SURVIVAL PROTEIN COULD AID LEUKEMIA TREATMENTAn effective way to fight leukemia might be to knock out a specific protein that protects cancer cells from dying, a new study shows. The findings suggest that a drug that can block this “survival protein” might on its own be an effective therapy. But such a drug used in combination with several existing drugs might also offer an effective one-two punch against drug-resistant forms of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS LOOSE SPACE APRIL 25Karen Franck, professor of Architecture at the New Jersey School of Architecture and a visiting professor at the Knowlton School of Architecture, will present “Loose Space: Possibility and Diversity in Urban Life” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/25) in 250 Knowlton Hall. The ECRF is the international forum for discussion of European film and European film culture, and this is the first time that the conference will be held outside of Europe. Contact: hauser.9@osu.edu or 292-6044 CRANE TO DISCUSS DIGITAL LIBRARIES APRIL 25Gregory Crane, professor of Classics at Tufts University, will discuss his work on the Perseus Project at a free program at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/25) at the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Crane is currently directing a $2.7 million grant to study the problems of digital libraries in the humanities. Much of his personal scholarship has gone into expanding the Greco-Roman materials in Perseus. The production is directed by Peter Kozma, with musical direction by Lucas Harris. It will be performed by OSU students, along with the Early Music Ensemble from Oberlin College performing the sensual score on period instruments. Tickets are available at the Theatre box office, 292-2295. 11TH AVENUE GARAGE ELEVATOR CLOSURE STARTS TODAYThe 11th Avenue Garage elevator will close for emergency repairs at 5 p.m. today (4/24) and will probably remain closed for an extended period of time. Additional disability parking spaces will be temporarily added to the first level of the garage for the duration of the elevator closure. Temporary disability parking passes may be requested through the ADA Coordinator’s Office at 292-6207 for those who anticipate difficulty in accessing the upper levels of the 12th Avenue Garage but who do not have a disability parking permit. Read More > MEN’S VOLLEYBALL IN MIVA TOURNAMENT APRIL 26The OSU men’s volleyball team is the #1 seed in the upcoming MIVA tournament and will play a semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (4/26) in St. John Arena. If OSU wins the tournament, they will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship, hosted by Ohio State Thursday (5/3) and Saturday (5/5).
